Garden Goals

The apartment we are about to move into has a very large outdoor area. It’s actually larger than the inside! The garden has been planted out with a fairly generic, low-maintenance garden. This is fine but won’t really meet what we want from that space, so we will make some changes once we move in. To guide the changes we have several goals:

  • A place for our dog Riley to do his business.
  • Food production.
  • Water in the garden.
  • Plantings that enhance our local biodiversity.
  • Spaces for entertaining and relaxing.
  • Space for a clothesline and some green/food waste processing.

Do you like to get into the garden?

  1. We have a large backyard and in the past have tried different gardens… with varying success. It’s hard here in Florida, but people do it successfully (not us.) In the past we’ve grown herbs, tomatoes, carrots, and tried other various failed projects. Right now the only thing I have growing, food-wise is a papaya tree. It’s small, but I’m hoping to get fruit from it soon. Oh, we also have a very overgrown “butterfly garden.” I was more into these projects when the kids were little and we would do it together. Oh, yes we also used to have a clothesline which I LOVED, but my husband took it down because he didn’t think it looked good (sigh.)

  2. I don’t have a garden and thought I didn’t want one because I don’t naturally tend toward that sort of thing…but now that the kids are a bit older, I think I might really enjoy a garden project.
Right now our backyard is very basic, but it has lots of potential. We’ve been focussed on house renovations since moving in – it’s an older home and needed A LOT of work – but it’s time to invest some time/money into the exterior and I think those changes will maybe make me even happier than the house upgrades? A beautiful natural space is just such a joy to be in…

  3. We have a small backyard. It doesn’t really lend itself to much more than container gardening (I try to grow some stuff every year with mediocre success) and I don’t want to invest into landscaping because it’s not our home, but I still love having a garden.

  4. We do have a backyard and I love it so much! Especially during the pandemic it was my sanctury. The previous owner of the house did an aawesome job creating it so in the beginning I was just keeping it up buut over time I started changing things here and there. But having a great starting point made it much easier. Best time is spring when everything is blooming. California does not get much rain during spring, summer and fall but in spring it still is glorious.

  6. Sounds like a loveyl and big space you are about to get. I only have a balcony with a few pots I am working on growing an herb garden for my tea making. I sometimes wish for a bigger space but I. am not sure I want to do all the garden work every weekend….
