Bologna Pasta Class – 9th Nov

Bologna is famous for three things—the oldest university in the world, food and its porticos which are UNESCO World Heritage listed. In planning our two full days here I had the food side pretty much covered and then planned to hit the other two in the gaps. Our first day I had booked a pasta making class. Bologna has several pastas that it is known for, tortelloni, tortellini, tagliatelle ragu and lasagna verdi. In our pasta class we would make and eat the first three. That would start later, this morning we went for a run. Had some breakfast. I’m off coffee due to migraines but most bars do fresh…

Brescia, Italy – Wed 8th to Thurs 9th Nov

After our delayed flight to Milan we finally arrived in to Brescia mid-afternoon. We checked into the hotel and then headed off to the Roman ruins. Since we were so late, G’s client meeting was moved to the following afternoon, so he was able to join me sightseeing. Brescia is a bit off the normal tourist route. It is about 40 mins by train from Milan to the west of Lake Garda. The monumental area of San Salvatore – Santa Guilia Monastery and Capitolium Temple Archeological area are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site: Longobards in Italy. Places of Power. On a previous visit to Brescia I had spent…

Walking the Highline then off to Italy – Nov 7th

Our last day in New York (☹️)… but we’re off to Italy (🍝🍦) We checked out after breakfast and left our luggage at the hotel. We headed over to the Highline, a linear park on the old elevated railway. Although the wildflowers were well past their prime, there were still some blooming and the seed heads and autumn leaves were really beautiful. We walked to the Chelsea end, then popped down and doubled back along the river to Little Island. This little park has a very cool design and more wonderful natural style plantings. We crossed back to the old Nabisco factory which now houses the Chelsea market. We had…

Another Food Tour and some Blues – Mon Nov 6 2023

Yes, I know another food tour … this time in the Lower East Side. We started at Katz Deli. Made famous by that scene in when Harry Met Sally. We had the specialty, pastrami on bread with some deli mustard. It was good. Melt in your mouth and so tasty. Not far from there is the original Russ and Daughters store. Appetising since 1914. It was packed inside but I got a few photos and had a look at all the different foods they were selling. We had another rugalech. It was still good. Walking through the streets we got a good look at the old buildings. Most of the…

New York Museums – Sat 4 Nov

This morning G had to drop his bag at the bag drop in Central Park so we walked together to do that. Central Park is looking beautiful with all the autumn leaves. After dropping the bag G headed back to the hotel and I went to The Met. So, it’s huge, but I am obsessed with very old things so I chose to spend most of my time in the Egyptian galleries, with a few other highlights. I also walked through one of the current exhibitions Tree and Serpent which contained early Buddhist art from India which was fascinating. After The Met I caught the subway to the 9/11 Memorial.…

Brooklyn Food Tour – Friday Nov 3rd

OK, back to Friday’s activities. We began the morning by joining the Fleet Feet Morning Miles run. It was a fun way to start the day but given what was coming next it would have been good for me to run further than 3km. I told you we love food tours … and there’s even more to come. Today’s, Best of Brooklyn 1/2 Day Food and Cultural Tour was a bit different, being a bus tour, which made it perfect for us, since G was serious about resting his legs before the big race. We met the guide in the West Village. Driving through Manhattan we got some good commentary…

    Marathon Sunday – 5th November

I’m skipping ahead because … Marayhon Sunday!! Today was the big day. My husband caught the bus at 5:30 am from Bryant Park. The bus driver got lost on the way so they spent 45 mins longer on the bus. This turned out not too bad because he was in the warm sitting on a comfortable seat. They arrived 10 minutes before my husband’s corral opened. He was pretty impressed with the number of toilets provided, he didn’t even have to queue which has been pretty standard at most races. I had my plan to try to see G in four spots. I caught the subway out to Brooklyn 86th…

Cruise and BIB Pickup – Thurs Nov 2nd

In order to see a bit of New York while also keeping my husband off his legs we did a Circle line cruise. It was supposed to go all the way around the island, but t he e tide was too high to get through. We went as far as we could up the East River then back. We got a good view of the Statue of Liberty, the bridges and the skyline. Lunch was dell’anima at the Gotham Market. We sat up at the chef’s counter and watched the cooking. The pasta was good and perfect for carb-loading. After lunch we popped over to the Javits Centre to pick…

UN, MOMA and a Musical – Wed Nov 1 2023

Thanks to all of you who commented on my photos. I couldn’t bring my proper camera due to weight restrictions so all these photos are taken with my iPhone 12 mini. Today marked the start of my husband’s intention to preserve his legs for the marathon on Sunday. In practice that means that I headed off on my own for a potion of the days. My plan was to take advantage of this time by myself to visit some galleries. I actually prefer doing this by myself because I can look at what I want to see for as long as I feel like. We started the morning at the…

DC to New York -Halloween 2023

Today Hubby and I swapped roles – he didn’t sleep well so skipped his run while I got up and hit the Capital Crescent Trail. While running along there, I noticed up ahead a black SUV reversing up the trail with a Secret Service agent walking beside. I think he was just making sure the driver didn’t hit any of the cyclists or runners using the trail. Anyway, the Secret Service Agent said to me “You can keep running ma’am.” Is it slightly ridiculous that I thrilled by this interaction, and the possibility of someone important in the SUV about to go cycling on the same trail? I think it…
