Berlin Bike Tour – Thurs 16th Nov

Today we had a bike tour with Berlin by Bike. It was their highlights tour, so the idea was for us to get a good overview of the city history and sites. Berlin has very good bike infrastructure so this was a good way to see the city. We started out at Prenzlauer Berg. Our first stops were back in the area we’d been the night before, but this time it wasn’t raining and we even got some blue sky. We got to see a part of the wall memorial we’d missed the night before, where you could look through a mock-up of the inner wall to see what the death strip would have looked like. There was also a guard tower. We also had a look at the old Jewish section of the city and learnt about some of that history.

Street Art. The marbling on the meat makes the shape of the Berlin districts. Ie it is a commentary on the slicing up of Berlin.
Watchtower.

Next we went into the centre of town, seeing the Berliner Dom, Museum Island, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag.

We were so fortunate with the weather. It was still cold but the rain stayed away. Unfortunately our Reichstag visit that I”d booked for later in the afternoon was cancelled so we missed going inside. E was keen to go up the TV tower so we popped in there before our dinner.

  1. That looks like a fun tour, and kills two birds with one stone! I like cycling around a city or area, as you really can cover more ground without having to do too much work! I have not been to Berlin but it is definitely on my list. The meat slicing exhibit is unusual!! Also I always wanted to see where the Berlin wall was and to learn more about the history of that.

    1. Berlin is especially good for biking because it is flat. There are a lot of good historical museums and sites to visit in Berlin.

  2. I’ve never been to Berlin, but would love to visit (my husband has been and thought it was a wonderful destination). That memorial is so, so sobering.

    1. I will have to come back because I really want to see the Pergamon museum but it closed in October for a renovation that’s going to take years. We will be back in the not too distant future though because G plans to do the Berlin marathon but I don’t think he will want to wait for the museum to open

  3. Oh, a bike tour sounds so fun. I spent a lot of time in Berlin in the 1990s and I can see there are some new things. That memorial to the murdered Jews definitely wasn’t there when I was. And that street art is pretty awesome!

    1. I’m sure Berlin has hanged heaps since you were there. It’s been integrated into one city for a lot longer now.

  4. I love that you explored the city by bike!

    1. It was a great way to see Berlin because it is fairly spread out.
