Today we left Berlin in the mid-afternoon so we had some time in the morning to do some sightseeing. We went for brunch then we decided to go out to the Stasi museum. This is located in the old Stasi headquarters. We learnt all about the tactics and strategies the DDR used to suppress resistance. They had photos, documents and artefacts from the time including various hidden cameras and listening devices for surveillance. The rooms associated with the director were all open and had been kept as they had been before the fall of the wall. We watched a TV show on Netflix called Kleo, which was about a Stasi assassin around the time of the Berlin Wall. In it she went ballistic in one of the headquarters and the cutout in the show was just like in the rooms here with their shiny wood(?) panelling and brown furniture. There was even a red suitcase in the Stasi museum like the one that played a big part in the TV show which was kind of fun. There were also pictures of a pre-schooler in a kiddie tank and a training grenade used in PE class.
We went back to the hotel and picked up our luggage and headed to the station for our 2pm train to Hamburg. We arrived about 4pm and walked to our serviced apartment not far from the main train station. I had booked dinner at Oberhafen Kanteen. It’s an old workers canteen located under/next to the railway. The walls and floors are all crooked so it’s a bit of a mind bending experience. I chose the Oberhafen dinner which was a platter of regional specialties. I liked some better then others, but it was way too much food to finish.

Such interesting photos! I’ve never been to Germany, it looks amazing.
I’ve enjoyed our time here. I think it was the perfect European country to bring our son to. I’d like to come back and explore more of the countryside and small towns
The food – I just cannot get over how incredible the food looks!
So much history. It’s a bit mind-boggling when we consider all the layers of deception and history and culture that run throughout every inch of this globe (and, of course, major things happening simultaneously).
The platter was pretty impressive! The Stasi museum was very interesting.
That is all supposed to be one dinner???? It IS a lot of food!
You’re really bringing me back to the time I spent in Germany. I’ll be interested to see what you do in Hamburg- I found it to be not as interesting as some of the other places, there’s not as much history there. But it’s a pretty city!
The main reason Hamburg was included in our trip was to visit the Airbus factory, but the tours we took were very interesting
The Stasi Museum is so cool. I didn’t know about it.
And that dinner looks absolutely amazing. My mouth is watering!
