Camino de Santiago: Portomarin to Palas de Reis

Date: Tues Oct 15th 2024

It was very misty in the morning. The countryside was similar to the previous day and would remain that way as we made our way through Galicia towards Santiago de Compostella. The walk passed through a mix of fields and forest punctuated by frequent villages with small Romanesque churches (most open for passport stamping which we skipped), lots of horreos and massive pumpkins. We reached the highpoint on today’s trail at around 10:15 am and enjoyed the almost 360-degree views. At the very top of the hill were the ruins of an old Iron Age Fort, but we didn’t do the extra walk to look at them as there really wasn’t much to see.

In the afternoon, it bucketed down. Luckily, my shorts are rapid dry because I didn’t get out my waterproof pants and the shorts were saturated in the short time it took us to enter the town and find our accomodation. We stayed in a cute little home, but the bedroom was tiny, and we hardly had enough room to open the cases. There weren’t many places to eat, but we wandered down to the central part of town and had a good meal at A Reloxeria.

The stats from G’s Garmin for the Sarria to Portomarin leg of the Camino: Distance – 25.67 km; Total Elevation Gain – 602 m; Moving Time: 5:35:39.

And off my Garmin for that day: Steps – 36,541

  1. Such beautiful pictures. Sounds like a great day aside from the rain. Glad your shorts were quick dry. I’m a little nervous about the accommodations we are staying at in Florence. Your room must’ve been SO small.

    1. Most of our rooms were a decent size. There were compensating aspects to this place. The host was lovely and provided the best breakfast of our trip.

  2. Enjoyed this post. Especially the pictures of the moody, overcast skies, a small chapel and the bell tower, and of course the kittens. Keep these posts coming!

    1. Thanks Daria. I hope to finish the posts on this trip before we leave for the UK. I find they take a while to do.

  3. What a moody image on the top.
Was every church this crowded to get a stamp? Did you mind not getting one? I bet it would be cool to have a whole collection.
