I pottered around the garden today and marvelled at how much more pleasant it is to garden in mild weather. Even though it is still officially winter here we are having a spring weather day so at least for today I didn’t come back into the house with freezing hands. I even had lunch outside which was a treat.
The garden is looking reasonably good. I finished my tidying after our holidays and because it has been fairly cold it has remained mainly weed-free and neat. Unfortunately, our dog has been digging and dug a big hole in the corner behind the tree below. I’ve replanted the plants he dug up and am waiting to see if they’ll survive.
There are certainly signs of Spring. Our grass tree is looking particularly happy and is rewarding us with a flower.
Our citrus trees are also shooting.
Although our Spring weather can often be cold and wet these little glimpses of Spring make me very happy. I’ve fertilised the citrus and started some lettuce seedlings and my next job is to order some tomato, capsicum and bean seeds.
Have you had a glimpse of the new season where you live? Are you looking forward to it?

Our next season is fall and YES I can feel it in the air. The sun gets very warm/hot by mid-day, but the mornings are very crisp lately. I love fall (it’s my favourite season), so I’m happy to see the first signs of this glorious weather. That said, I also know that fall is the shortest season in terms of only having 2-3 weeks of this perfect weather and then, really, it’s more like winter here until spring. But I love it while it lasts…
That’s unfortunate that Fall only lasts 2-3 weeks for you, I suppose you have to make every day count. I don’t envy your cold winters.
In New Jersey, we have fall next and I have not seen any signs yet- today it’s 89 degrees F! Fall happens to be my favorite time of year.
1. All the smells (leaves/fire/apples/pumpkins)
2. All the colors (starting with deep red/purple and finishing with light yellow and everything in between).
3. Cooler weather gets rid of mosquitoes.
4. Activities: hiking and apple picking. Plus, making everything from apples (because you usually come back with more apples than you know what to do with): pies, cider, sauce.
5. Thanksgiving (my favorite food!) + days off
6. Halloween in October ( we take this holiday very seriously lol)
7. A road trip at the beginning of November for when my district is closed for the teacher convention.
8. Clothing- cozy+warm+soft=lots of sweaters
9. Making fire in the fireplace
10. My daughter’s birthday is in November.
Fall seems to be a winner for a few people here. I alkso enjoy our autumn weather, especially March which is dry and warm but not hot.
No glimpse of the new season yet. Still pretty much summer (and hot!), but I am looking forward to the cooler weather (but not the darker mornings).
Yes, it is always a balance between the good parts of each season.
