List #37: Five podcasts I listen to

Photo by Matt Botsford on Unsplash

I normally listen to podcasts on my easy and long runs, and occasionally while walking, doing housework or driving. These are the ones I turn to most often:

  1. Rebuilders – A podcast by Red Church in Melbourne that looks at culture ( and especially cultural movements) and the intersection with ministry. Some really smart analysis of the current cultural zeitgeist.
  2. Democracy Sausage – expert analysis of Australia politics and public affairs. For my overseas readers, if you are wondering about the name, in Australia voting is compulsory and elections are held on Saturday in schools, churches and other public buildings. Often the hosting venue will put on a fundraising sausage sizzle which gave rise to the term democracy sausage—often the highlight of voting in person.
  3. She Runs Strong – a podcast for female runners over 45.
  4. Strength Running – Jason Fitzgerald usually interviewing experts in the area of running
  5. The Bible Project – the ultimate in bible nerdery

Do you listen to podcasts? What activity do you pair them with? What are your favourites?

  1. Oh wow- i just found a new podcast! I’ve never heard of She Runs Strong but it sounds like I would love it. I’ll check it out!

    1. The episodes aren’t too long which is good, and they sometimes have experts on if they want to go deeper into a particular topic.

  2. I have never even HEARD of those podcasts!
I do listen to a lot of podcasts, I like some of the more independent ones, but then one of the Australian ladies on our trip introduced me to Palace Confidential and I AM OBSESSED. Generally I listen to podcasts about books, writing, and skin care. I also love Were You Raised By Wolves which is about modern etiquette. So in other words, our podcasts do not overlap at all!

    1. Yes, you will not find me listening to a podcast about skincare, but that etiquette podcast sounds like it would be fun.

  3. Ha ha! We have very different tastes in podcasts. I listen to A LOT of them and generally listen when I’m walking the dog, doing chores, and working out. I listen mostly to comedy and true crime and NEVER for educational purposes.

    1. We are opposites because I never listen to podcasts for entertainment.

  4. Democracy sausage- thank goodness you explained. I could not make sense of that. I listen to a Catholic rosary podcast when I run or walk. I try to listen daily so if I am not up to date I listen if I’m driving somewhere. Probably listening to it since Covid. Recently I started listening to Good hang- amy poehler’s podcast. It’s entertaining.

    1. Isn’t it funny how some COVID habits have really stood the test of time?

  5. Democracy Sausage would have definitely had me confused if you hadn’t explained! I usually don’t listen to podcasts or even music when I’m outdoors. I tend to enjoy the sounds of nature more.

    1. I figured I would need to explain it for non-Australians. I like to make sure I am doing at least some of my walks and runs without anything on.

  6. I had no idea that voting was compulsory in Australia and have never heard the phrase democracy sausage! I really like Pantsuit Politics, The Girls Next Door, The Lazy Genius, and the Ezra Klein show. I’ll listen while I’m walking, driving, cooking, or doing other chores.

    1. I occasionally listen to Ezra Klein when it is a topic that isn’t US-centric.

  7. You know, I’ve never listened to a podcast! My daughter has recommended a few, but I just haven’t tried.

    1. They are good for doing listening to when you are doing something else that is a bit boring.

  8. i know strength training podcast, now i will check she runs. I feel like female runners above 45 should be a special category 🙂

    1. Needs do change as you get older. They discuss recovery, nutrition, injury prevention, and related topics.

  9. Such a different podcast queue than what mine looks like. I have business, social media and marketing and freelance stuff, as well as books and random podcasts where people share life and then I have a few financial and real estate ones. I am running low on my creative art podcast since I have listened to all of them it feels like and I can’t find new ones I enjoy.

    1. The good thing about podcasts is that there are so many, most people should be able to find something that interests them.

  10. This is so different from my list! I like the idea of podcasts, but I’m so easily distracted that I can miss a whole chunk and then trying to rewind to what I can remember is a pain. But I’m trying to give them a real try – I’ve enjoyed Health Wanted and Twenty Thousand Hertz the most so far. It works best for me if I’m walking or doing something relatively mindless, like doing dishes/cleaning up the kitchen.

Thank you for explaining democracy sausage! So different from the US, I would never have figured it out.

    1. The distraction problem is who I don’t listen to audio books

  11. I am a proclaimed non-podcast listener, although I will say that I have strayed a little bit in recent months and have occasionally downloaded an episode. I just don’t follow any podcasts religiously and listen to *every* episode.

    1. I pick and choose which episodes to listen to. Rebuilders is the only one I hardly ever miss and episode of, but it doesn’t have episodes every week.

  12. Yes I absolutely love podcasts. My too 5?
    1. Best Laid Plans by Sarah Hart-Unger
    2. On Progress
    3. Size Orman
    4. What Fresh Hell
    5. The Lazy Genius

I cherry pick the episodes and if the episode doesn’t keep my attention I skip to the next one. Overall, my interests are productivity, personal finance, and parenting.

    1. I usually pick and choose podcasts too. Before I go out I scan the new episodes and put theo nes I want to listen to in my queue.
