"Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it." – Mary Oliver

March’s Books

Summarising in 25 words what was most noteworthy to me from the books I finished this month.

The Great Hunt (The Wheel of Time #2) – Robert Jordan

I’m enjoying this epic series, but the books are very long, with tiny print. Luckily they are engaging enough that the time is worth it.

The Golden Enclaves (The Scholomance #3) – Naomi Novik

A satisfying end to this series. I felt like the inner monologue, which I found a bit irritating in earlier instalments, decreased in this one.

Sister Girl – Jackie Huggins

Essays by an Aboriginal historian and activist. I appreciated the perspective that helped me better understand the issues of racism and its intersection with feminism.

Talking About a Revolution – Yassmin Abdel-Magied

I appreciated Yassmin’s perspective on life as a migrant and Muslim in Australian society and also her reflections on her experiences working in male-dominated settings.

The Priory of the Orange Tree – Samantha Shannon

Another fantasy doorstop read this month. Loved this! Interesting magic, powerful female characters, good and bad dragons, separate stories that come together in the finale.

  1. Did you find The Priory of the Orange Tree dragged a bit? I wanted to love that book – it’s everything I want fantasy to be – but instead I just found myself nodding off. Ha! Maybe that says more about me than the book itself!

It dragged a little in the middle section, but I was invested by then.
