Wilson’s Prom: Day 3

I woke up feeling pretty tired from the previous days hiking, but we had another two hikes planned for today. The first was the Lilly Pilly Circuit. You can start this walk from a dedicated carpark, but we hiked from our accommodation. We crossed the Tidal River again, but this time headed inland. The walk traverses several different types of environments, including a stand of grass trees covering one hillside bordered by an area of scrubby She-Oak and Banksia recovering from fire.

We then crossed the road and the entered the rainforest.

There were a variety of fungi through this area, and so we all got into the act of fungi spotting.

The boardwalk loops around then head back to the carpark through dry forest. Then we crossed the road and retraced our steps back to Tidal River.

In the afternoon our plan was to walk out to Norman Point, we knew the rest of the trail out to Little Oberon Bay was closed but when we got to the trail head on Norman Beach we saw that the whole trail was closed so we walked back up the beach enjoying the scenery. There were a heap of these By-the-wind Sailors washed up on the beach.

As we walked back up the river we noticed the brilliant aqua colour of the water. The previous day the tide was going out and the water all the way to the sea was stained brown by tannins but this day the tide was pushing the sea water back up the river. It was pretty cool seeing the point were the sea water and river water met.

Since our afternoon plans were shuttled we decided to drive to the Wildlife walk. This is a 2.3km walk through supposedly open grasslands but there were very scrubby and mostly covered in bracken. We did see some grey kangaroos. They are being studied and many are collared and tagged.

One came up behind us on the path. It stopped there between the two groups of people trying to work out what to do. We quickly moved to the side of the path where we were out of the way for the kangaroo to follow its mates into the scrub. Once we were out of its way it took advantage and hopped down towards us and through the well-beaten path into the scrubby bushland.

Step found for today was 28,000. After dinner game was 500.

  1. Gorgeous pictures, as always!!

  2. Oh my goodness, what stunning photos! This looks like a wonderfully varied walk, with so many different types of scenery … I’d never come across a ‘By-The-Wind Sailor’ and had to go off and google :). I love the photo where the two wtaers meet …

I had to do some googling once I got home to work out what they were on the beach. It took a few tries but “blue creatures washed on beach” worked.

  3. Beautiful – what a fun getaway. Happy anniversary!
