Good Things Friday

This week has not been the easiest. The report from my MRI finally came in and I have a stress fracture in my second metatarsal which means I’m now in a boot. . I also lost most of two days to vestibular migraine. On Wednesday, I just managed to stick with work long enough to finish payroll before going back to bed for a couple of hours.

Even so, the week still had plenty of good things.

Mother’s Day Celebrations

Since Sunday was going to be taken up by G’s long run and then lunch with his family, I had my Mother’s Day celebrations on Saturday. The girls came over for brunch at a local cafe, then back to our place for some puzzling. In the afternoon G and I went to an early showing of The Way, My Way, a movie about one man’s experience on the Camino de Santiago. It was a little bit of priming for our trip to walk some of the Camino in October.

My turnaround point.

Sunday, I went for a long bike ride along the coast. It was foggy as I started out, with the bank of fog receding back across the water as I rode. I thought it was fully lifted until I rode into a thick bank of fog cloaking Greenpoint. It was an interesting experience, riding into the cool mist. I wore my new padded bike pants, which helped my backside a lot. Afterwards, I had two sourdough crumpets absolutely slathered in butter and honey. Not a high-protein breakfast and the crumpets are not cheap, but a lovely treat for special occasions.

After my shower, we prepared an apple and fruit crumble for lunch. Then, we swung past the girl’s place in Hawthorn to pick up S (H was not feeling well) and went to G’s sister’s place to have lunch with his family. In the car, S handed over the kid’s Mother’s Day present to me—a journal and a book full of Melbourne day trips. They know me well!

Graduation

Our younger daughter, S, had her graduation ceremony on Thursday. Bachelor of Commerce and Actuarial Science. She is the fourth Monash University graduate in our family. G and I, as well as her older sister, all went to Monash. This may be our last graduation ceremony, I can’t imagine our son wanting to go to uni anytime soon.

Bonus Good Things

  • Since I realised I couldn’t run the Gold Coast Marathon before the cutoff for refunds and transfers, I was able to transfer my entry to another runner and get my money back.
  • I can still go to the gym for selected strength training and cycling.
  • A little bit of inspiration for future travel: Europe’s Best Long-distance Hiking Trails
  • 20 Nature Journaling Ideas to Connect with the Natural World
  • Gratitude Journal: 100 Ideas and Prompts … these Good Things Friday posts are my public gratitude journal.
  • Working from home … allowed me to do payroll on Wednesday and then crawl back into bed.
  • Riley, our dog, got groomed this week, and he is so soft and not smelly.
  • Not today, but most of the week has been the most stunning blue sky Autumn days. I’ll probably keep listing this each week until winter starts to bite.
  • Working my way through the veggies that arrived in our box from CERES Fair food. I tried a new broccoli salad recipe from the Tenderheart book, and it was good.
  • Our son’s girlfriend, who we hadn’t caught up with for a few weeks, came for a family dinner on Monday.

Over to you … good things this week? Do you keep a gratitude journal? Did you celebrate Mother’s Day last weekend?

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about the stress fracture. What a bummer. Ugh. Hope it heals well and quickly.

I did celebrate Mother’s Day; I was on duty for the day since my husband flew out that morning, but it was actually quite relaxed and nice. The rest of the week was a bit of a gong show in terms of parenting (SO MUCH SIBLING FIGHTING), but we’re almost through to the other side!

I don’t keep a gratitude journal, per se, but I do have my Happy Things Friday posts which keep me on top of what things are delighting me. I also have a One Line a Day Journal and in my planner I rank each day’s mood and then tally that for each month (up arrow = great, down = bad, sideways = just fine).

    1. Parenting on yuor own is hard, especially for introverts. I hope things pick up for you.

  2. Oh, you’re walking the Camino! That is so exciting and something I want to do as well. Sorry about your fracture, hope the healing is quick and smooth! Congrats to your daughter on her graduation.

    1. I’m really looking forward to the Camino. We have done a couple of remote hiking gtrips (staying in nice lodges) but this is our first one hiking between villages.

  3. Oh no, Melissa, I am so sorry about the stress fracture… that truly s*cks, but at least you know what you’re dealing with now.
I am glad you still had a nice Mother’s Day and congrats on your daughter’s graduation!

  4. Ugh re: your stress fracture! I was in a boot for a stress fracture over 10 years ago and it was the pits. I was supposed to run the Chicago marathon but had to give up on that goal, but I ate the cost of the race as I could not transfer my bib. Womp womp. I hope you heal fast!

Congrats to your daughter on her graduation. Actuarial Science!! So impressive!! I was a math major and if my school had offered actuarial science I would have pursued a degree in that probably… but it all worked out in the end as I love working in asset management.

    1. That’s a bummer about Chicago. Did you get back and do it another year? We are definately all about numbers, rather then words in our family. It’s great that you love your work.

  5. I am sorry that injury is even more severe and you have to be in a boot. I hope it will heal quickly. And meehhh for migraines. Not cool.

Congrats to your daughter for graduating.

I have no idea what crumpets are but they do look tasty.

    1. Crumpets are a type of griddle cake. They get cooked in a pan and have all these air bubbles on the top. You toast them and then the butter and other toppings all melt into the holes. so good. You must hunt them down at some stage. I think they’re originally British.

      1. I did google for a recipe. They are actually ver similiar to a regional dish where I grew up. We call them Hefeplinse but they are very thin more like a crepe. But the dough seems to be quiete similar. I may give those crumpets a try.
