List #18: Good Things Friday – January 2025

I’ve decided to switch it up this year, so my Good Things Friday posts will now be monthly on the last Friday of the month.

  • New Year, New possibilities?
  • I’ve already mentioned my mum’s Christmas Pudding, but I’m listing it again because I ate it in January.
  • Our son, E and K’s excitement about their engagement.
  • E and K arriving home safely from their trip to South Africa.
  • Getting back into a proper running schedule
  • The Mountain to Surf fun run and a weekend away with friends
  • Bananagrams. A fun and portable game.
  • Picking berries and making jam
  • Beach days. Swimming in the ocean.
  • Having a real summer. The weather this year has been fantastic. Warm, but not ridiculously hot, with enough beach days and no days when we needed to get our jackets.
  • Time with my parents and extended family at Point Lonsdale. Having a break from deciding what’s for dinner and more hands to share the work around.
  • Booking our accommodation for Wales. I had to rough out what I thought we might do so I could work out how many nights to spend where. I settled on six nights at a cottage in the countryside near Bangor, four nights in St David and three nights in the Brecon Beacons. I also booked three nights in Oxford for myself while G will be working. The anticipation and planning of the trip are a big part of my enjoyment.
  • Seeing lots of Splendid Fairy Wrens – at Lorne, Point Lonsdale and bayside on the foreshore.
  • Celebrating dad’s 85th birthday with a big family lunch.
  • Puzzle making. Even with our time away, we finished the 4000-piece the girls gave me for my birthday.
  • Produce from my garden
  • A massage. I think my last one was in 2023, and I was well overdue.
  • Horseradish or horseradish creme. We’ve had roast beef several times this month and I love, love, love having horseradish with it.
  • Steak night at the pub with the kids and a couple of friends.
  • Getting back to Tuesday night sessions with our running group. I hadn’t been since last March. On Tuesday nights, I will drive to the girl’s place, meet our daughter, S, and run together to Xavier, where the sessions are usually held. I work harder in a group environment and think S does, too.
  • Australia Day long weekend. We went back to my parent’s place at Point Lonsdale.
  • Rereads. I read Sharon Penman’s Welsh trilogy years ago and have started a reread. So good. I devoured the first book in a few days, and now I’m waiting for our daughter H to pick up the second book from her library.
  • Watching the Australian Open Tennis. The only Grand Slam on at a reasonable time for us. The women’s final was so good – big congratulations to Madison Keys.
  • MAFS, our guilty pleasure is back on TV.
  • Herbal and green tea. My parents have a cup of tea every night after dinner, and I joined them with a sleep-tight herbal tea. The girls gave me a gift box of three teas for my birthday. I’ve also been having a cup of either herbal or oolong tea during the day. We have many tins of oolong and green tea gifted from Chinese friends and suppliers, so I have a ready supply.

  1. This is a great list. I just clicked on the advice to someone starting a blog. I really enjoyed that. So much there that I think I needed to read. I want to focus on writing what I want to write and not worry about who likes it or whether or not it pleases people. I’ve been pondering some of the ideas she mentioned in that post and I am so glad I stumbled on it here.

An engagement – so exciting. Your weekends away and your meals with family and friends sound delightful. Your weather sounds perfect. I love the warmer months, but not too hot (esp as I age, I feel like I embrace that more and more) and not chilly enough to require a jacket. Perfection. I’m happy for you to be getting back to regular running schedule.

January here has been very cold. Lots of basketball, which I really enjoy. It’s the first January in years that I felt we needed to get people back in school and back into a schedule after the holiday break. We are starting to plan our trip to Italy. That’s both exciting and a tad overwhelming. We are unsure how long we should plan to stay for x amount of days. The weather is improving, and I’m excited for that. I ran a tiny bit outside today.

    1. I’m glad you found that link helpful. I suppose it’s good to have an indoor sport during winter when it’s so cold. Italy is going to be fabulous.

  2. You had a really great month of January! A family wedding is such an exciting thing!

January was not my favorite, but the first 12 days of the month were really great. I had a lot of new year energy and we had a really fun triple date to celebrate a friend‘s birthday that included mini golf and dinner at our favorite restaurant. And I really did need to have the surgery so I’m glad I had the courage to do it and that I’m on the road to recovery now.

    1. I’m glad you got in some fun before yuor operation and hope that you conitnue to recover well.

  3. Thank you for the link about Meta, I am going to look into that. I have considered giving up Facebook, but it brings me a lot of joy, and also I volunteer for a couple of organizations that use it for communication, so I’m hoping I don’t have to actually delete it.

It sounds like you had a really good January! Mine has been a mixed bag. Personally it’s been good, but I feel like my country has betrayed me and the world, and that is stressing me the hell out. DEEP BREATHS.

    1. I have the same problem with Facebook, except that’s it’s more the group chts on messenger that are my issue. I’m still undecided, but I think I will ditch insta.

  4. Fellow rereaders unite! I love a good reread. It’s so comforting and happy.
I am STILL amazed that you did a four thousand piece puzzle. Incredible!
January was fine for me. We are having a cold snap now and everyone is losing their minds. However, I am from the Canadian prairies and this cold snap is not so cold, you know? It’s -10 right now, back in Calgary a cold snap would be -30. I can handle this!

    1. We had -25 in Whistler a few days while we were there which was a lot. I still do not like the sound of living in somewhere that has -10 temps. I think I’m too soft for any climate that’s not temperate.

  5. What a treasure trove of amazing things! I had to google splendid fairywren – what a pretty bird!
I love the list of blog/article recommendations, too- especially the advice for people wanting to start a blog and the list of journal prompts. I am trying to get away from “and then I did this…” blogging style lol

    1. I love the fairy wrens so much. Growing up we had a family nesting near our back fence for a few years. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your blogging style. I was get a good sense of you through your writing.
