Happiness Falls – Angie Kim
From Storygraph: Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.
What follows is both a ticking-clock investigation into the whereabouts of a father and an emotionally rich portrait of a family whose most personal secrets just may be at the heart of his disappearance. Full of shocking twists and fascinating questions of love, language, race, and human connection, Happiness Falls is a mystery, a family drama, and a novel of profound philosophical inquiry. With all the powerful storytelling she brought to her award-winning debut Miracle Creek, Angie Kim turns the missing person story into something wholly original, creating an indelible tale of a family who must go to remarkable lengths to truly understand one another.
My Thoughts: This had lots of twists and turns and left everything up in the air until the end (or past it?). An engrossing story and fascinating family portrayal. I loved this and consider it a 5-star read.

The Heart Goes Last – Margaret Atwood
From Storygraph: Stan and Charmaine are a married couple trying to stay afloat in the midst of an economic and social collapse. Job loss has forced them to live in their car, leaving them vulnerable to roving gangs. They desperately need to turn their situation around – and fast. The Positron Project in the town of Consilience seems to be the answer to their prayers. No one is unemployed and everyone gets a comfortable, clean house to live in… for six months out of the year. On alternating months, residents of Consilience must leave their homes and function as inmates in the Positron prison system. Once their month of service in the prison is completed, they can return to their “civilian” homes.
At first, this doesn’t seem like too much of a sacrifice to make in order to have a roof over one’s head and food to eat. But when Charmaine becomes romantically involved with the man who lives in their house during the months when she and Stan are in the prison, a series of troubling events unfolds, putting Stan’s life in danger. With each passing day, Positron looks less like a prayer answered and more like a chilling prophecy fulfilled.
My Thoughts: I borrowed this on a whim from the library. None of the characters in this are very likeable but I still found myself hoping they would do better. The scary thing is that the scenario presented doesn’t seem that far fetched if we don’t tackle the excesses of our economic systems. Although fortunately more far fetched in a country like Australia where the safety net is pretty robust. 4.5 star read.

Happiness Falls is officially on my (admittedly much too long) TBR! Thanks for the rec.
Interesting. Happiness Falls is on my list of books I have ranted about on my blog. I have a lot of problems with it. It turned out that I also had problems with Miracle Creek, which is another one by the same author. I guess she’s just not the author for me!
I LOVED HAPPINESS FALLLLLLLLSSSSS! I was excited to see that. Margaret Atwood is one of my favourite authors…but I don’t enjoy her dystopian fiction (other than The Handmaid’s Tale, obviously!). She is just so talented! The Blind Assassin is my favourite book of all time, ALL TIME, and also on the list of all-time faves is Cat’s Eye and Moral Disorder.
See we do have some overlap in book likes!
I have heard of Happiness Falls, but it was a while ago and I never read it. It does sound like a book I would become very invested in. The other one, eek – I don’t think I would read that. It sounds too unsettling to me.
I feel like it had a really good mix of plot, character and family dynamics.
How timely, I was looking at my bookshelf this morning, and there was The Heart Goes Last, and I thought…have I read that? Read your synopsis, and yes, I have! I really liked t, very strange. I’ve also read Happiness Falls, which I liked but didn’t love. You got some good books there!
Glad to be of help!
Happiness Falls is on my list!
The other book reminds me of the Handmaid’s Tale by M Atwood and how it accurately portrays Mike Pence’s America. Not that Mr. Trump is any better…
Yes, this was Tech Bros on steroids.
Both are on my TBR now. Thanks.
I hope you like them
