Elisabeth has challenged us to do 10 minutes of intentional movement every day in October. Here’s the final days.
Wednesday October 29th: I did sn easy 20 minutes running before walking to personal training. Lifting for 45 mins and then walked home. Later in the day I walked to the shop to pick up some bread. Total Steps: 11,470
Thursday October 30th: Walked Riley to the park. He had a really good play with the other dogs. I think he forgot how old he is. Total Steps: 8,336

Friday October 31st: I switched my long run and easy run because I had a hair appointment and then we were heading to my parents place. 40 mins easy run along the beach and then back along Elwood Canal. Walked to the train station to catch the train to my hair appointment (17 minutes). Total Steps: 14,276.

Thoughts for the month: I usually walk and run quite a lot anyway, and there were no days where I needed to do a special outing for the challenge. I noticed that I rarely just take a walk. All of my walks this month were either walking Riley, or active transport ie walking somewhere I needed to go anyway. I actually dislike driving and find getting the car out a hassle, so I prefer to walk, even if it takes a bit longer. I am disappointed I didn’t ride my bike this month. I need to get back on it.
Did you do CBWC? Do you live in an area that is walkable? Do you normally have time to walk places instead of driving?

Yeah for walking so much and finishing the challenge.
I walk or take my bike usually when running errands.
So CBWC for me was actually getting outside and not doing that and not listening to a podcast or something. It only worked half the time though.
I hope to keep some of the momentum going into November. The evening walks after work really helped clear my mind and loosen up my neck and back.
I often find that getting outside after I’ve been on the computer for any length of time really helps to feel better.
I live in a very walkable area and like you, if we can walk, that is what I would prefer to do. We walked to one of the parties yesterday and I have walked to get the boys from school many times. I completed 30/31 walks and will say that I have walked more this past October than in any month since I was on mat leave! The walks were so good for my mental health. I haven’t ran as much as I’ve been craving more comfort.
I’ve enjoyed seeing your walks; the leaves are stunning. Walking with kids can be both easier and harder than using the car.
I’m the same, I’m always walking – I don’t need the challenge of a club, but it’s fun! I would not call my area particularly walkable. It’s hard to explain Kelowna, but there are many rural parts within the city – vineyards, orchards, areas for horses and cattle, etc., are all within the city. We are on one of those rural roads, in fact at the end of a dead end road. I can’t really walk anywhere, it is almost a kilometre just to get off my road, and then it takes a while to get to “civilization.” So I drive to walk, which is silly, but that’s what it is.
IT can be difficult to walk from home, anywhere in rural areas.
I loved this wrap-up, Melissa.
I completely relate to your observation about “accidental walking.” I rarely go on an intentional walk either; mine are usually functional ones: to the gym, the shops, the physio, to the hairdresser or to meet a friend. It all adds up, though!
Your mix of running, PT, and those walks makes for such a well-balanced routine. Also, that Elwood Canal photo – what a beautiful place for an easy run!
Yes, the canal is pretty nice, although it can get smelly depending on the tide.
I participated! Accidental walking totally counts. I don’t get that much of it on work from home days, but some days when I’m working clinically seeing pts I get a lot!! The fact that I’m earning steps makes me feel better about running around our spread out hospital, ha.
The weather where you are looks lovely!
Yes, to counting walking around for work. I can imagine you would rack up a few. Our weather is quite changeable at the moment, but I don’t mind. If yuo don’t like it you just have to wait and it will change.
It looks like you have lovely places to walk, and Riley looks happy about it! I live on a ranch and walk on a dirt road, which is lovely. But it’s too far to walk for shopping or anything practical.
I’m sure having all that nature around you makes up for not being able to walk to places.
Look at all those steps you got in! Gorgeous photos!
Thanks Suzanne
My area is very walkable, but I have to drive to work. I rarely just go for a walk without a dog – that would be a waste if you asked my dog’s opinion!
Yes, if I were just going for a walk for exercise, I would usually take Riley. The only exception was when I was training for the Camino.
As always, great photos. I do not live in an area that is walkable. We can walk to church, which we enjoy. I could walk to a grocery store, and I have, but I’d never be able to get all the food home. I sort of did the CBWC, but there were days when I didn’t walk outside. I tried, but on the days when I have too many babies to fit in my quad stroller and that was followed up by a busy evening – well, it didn’t happen.
I’m not surprised you can’t get all the food home when you shop. Most of the time it’s just G and I for dinner and I often get a box of veggies delivered so I’m just picking up odds and ends.
I adore that picture of Riley.
We live walking distance from most things in our town, though we live at the top of a very steep hill so these days convenience tends to win out and I drive more than I should. EVERYTHING requires walking up a hill. But once I get to the “downtown” we tend to park and do all our errands on foot after that!
We used to live at the top of a big hill, so I get it.
I did not participate in CBWC in October because I didn’t get around to posting, but I did “participate” in the way that I did walk daily – not always intentionally, but I did get my steps in.
I think the daily walks are what counts. Posting is just an add-on.
