We got a very heavy delivery this week. The delivery guys were not appreciative. Now that E has moved out into his own place we are going to set up his bedroom as a combination guest room (with pullout bed) and fitness room. My plan is to drop my general gym membership and do one personal training session and 1-2 at home strength sessions a week. Now I just need to unpack the boxes before Sunday which is my next scheduled session. I never did Sundays before even though it worked well with my current running and PT schedule because I knew I just wouldn’t follow through with going out to the gym regularly.
You know how last week I wrote that my lungs were OK after the virus … actually they are not. I tried two longer runs this week and both times my heart rate kept spiking when I was running at my normal easy pace. I tried dropping the pace down (by about 30s/km) and it didn’t help. Thursday I switched to run walking but I wasn’t getting very fair without the spike so pulled the pin and had to walk the last couple of K’s home. After that escapade my HRV dropped and my RHR increased overnight. My Garmin VO2MAX has decreased by 3 and I have joined the ranks of the “unproductive.” Although I wish my unproductive was half as good as Catrina’s. I think yesterday’s run put me back because I’m coughing more today than I was. My plan is to drop back to very easy 30 minute runs or walk/runs for a week or so and see if it gets better. I AM FRUSTRATED!!
The throat/coughing may have also been irritated by me singing yesterday. I don’t normally sing where I can be heard but I am organising worship this week and our lead singer was having trouble getting the tune on one of the songs. To help her find it I sang with her while we practiced. Luckily we are doing a fairly pared back arrangement on that song and it is not difficult, but I had to drop some of the more complicated rhythm I’d planned to use during one of the builds. I didn’t realise singing while playing would be that much harder—more practice is required!
I’ve never worn makeup very often and after the pandemic I threw away all my makeup since it was very old. Since then, every time I had an outing I might wear makeup to I haven’t because I have no makeup. This had to change because the wedding is next week. Last Friday I went to Mecca to have a look. I bought everything I need and the lady did my makeup so she could show me what to do. When she first suggested a cream blush I was uncertain, but it is easy to use which surprised me. We had K’s hen’s party on Saturday and I did my makeup to practice. I have a party this Saturday night so I’ll get another practice then, but I’m feeling pretty good about it. The only difficult bit is the mascara so I might need to practice that a bit more. I got a tubing mascara which is brilliant—no smudges and comes off in warm water.
Speaking of the wedding, the long range forecast is now out and it is 26C with a mix of cloud and sun, so just about perfect. I know these forecasts can change but the days either side look decent too so hopefully we will be lucky with the weather.
Are you a makeup wearer? Do you enjoy singing in public? What do you think would be ideal wedding weather?

Oh my goodness, welcome to the Unproductive Club, Melissa!! I TOTALLY feel your frustration, I’m sorry about the post-virus effects. Dropping the pace and walking was the right call, no question. Well done on listening to your body. It’s a good thing Berlin is still seven months away, you have plenty of time to recover properly before picking up your training again.
And wow, so much else going on! The wedding excitement must be building. I’m so happy the weather looks like it’s cooperating! Dress sorted, hair coloured and blow-dry tested, make-up practised…YOU ARE READY! I’m really looking forward to your post about it.
Well, I went further than unproductive and my Garmin labelled me overreaching on Saturday so watch out! I’m taking it really easy this week because I want to feel OK for the wedding.
Oh my gosh the weeding is so close. I hope I will be everything your son dreams off and you all have a wonderful time.
I am with you on the frustrated part. I have been sick so much in the past year that it feels like one step forward and two steps back when it comes to my fitness. (which isn’t entirely true because I am healthier I have been in a long time but still). Just the other day I went out for a 90 min walk and was down for another two days. Now I felt good and I migraine hit me. It is FRUSTRATING. Hope you are better soon and can start your training. I have exactly 4 weeks until my flight to the arctic. I am not as well prepared as I wanted to be.
Yes, it is so frustrating knowing you may be struck down with a migraine at any time, and then to add on flues and colds is annoying.
I LOVE tubing mascara. I don’t think I will ever go back to the older formulas. NO SMUDGING. It’s truly amazing.
So many things happening in your world. Sorry to hear about the lingering issues health wise. The bugs all seem to have staying power this year. Everyone I know that’s been sick has had ongoing symptoms. Hope you’re 100% through it soon <3
I was amazed at the tubing mascara. There seems to have been a few nasty bugs floating round Melbourne after the New Year.
The wedding is soon approaching. How exciting. We all can’t wait to hear all about it.
I do hope you feel 100% again soon. As Elisabeth said, the bugs seem to linger a lot longer than usual this season
It’s a bummer that this is a summer cold though. Oh well, this week will be very exciting and I am making sure I get plenty of rest before the wedding. I might switch back to just strength training and some yoga for the week.
The wedding is next week – so exciting. Sorry about the state of your lungs. I would be so frustrated. I hope your plan works. I wonder if you need a steroid inhaler for a few weeks? I have asthma, but it only acts up when I have a cold or upper respiratory infection. I use Advair for a few weeks and it helps keep everything open, etc.
I’ve never been really into makeup. I wear makeup sparingly. My bio girls don’t wear it much, but the two ‘newbies’ are dying to be allowed to wear makeup. Right now they are not allowed. I don’t know what tubing mascara is. When the girls were in Irish dancing, I had to ask for help at Ulta when shopping for the makeup they needed to wear when they competed. I was so clueless. I much prefer a natural look.
Oh, and NO – I would never sing in public and the public would never want me to sing for them. It’s a perfect arrangement.
If my lungs don’t sort themselves out this week, I’ll probably go to the doctor. I had to have a steroid inhaler about 15 years ago after I had the flu, and it did settle things down.
I prefer a natural look too, and when I do wear makeup, it is very light and natural looking.
LOL about the singing. No way would I sing into the microphone at church. My sister was a bit horrified at me singing in public, but I can kind of hold the tune, and would probably be better if I practices but I prefer the keys.
I hope your lungs clear soon. Those upper respiratory viruses can take so long to recover from! I’ve had that experience where I felt well enough to run, went for a run and coughed a bunch, and then felt worse for days! I hope you fully recover very soon!
I do not wear much make up. I only wear it on days I’m in the office or if I have a zoom on a WFH day. Otherwise I skip it. I also wear tubing mascara and much prefer it. It’s good to have a practice run at the make up before the big day!
The weather sounds nice for the wedding! I think around 20-25C is great as it’s not chilly but not overly hot either. We did not have great weather on my wedding day but it was indoors so it didn’t matter. It was on May 19th so we didn’t really count on super nice weather but it was way colder than usual and very overcast. But the photographer told us the overcast weather was ideal for pictures. I was glad I had gotten my sisters wraps as part of their bridesmaid gifts – we definitely needed them to when taking photos outside (we only wore them in a few pics and they looked really nice)!
I’m still having to take it easy with the running. It is always so tricky in the shoulder seasons ro know what the weather will be like. Definately lucky you got the wraps.
I’m excited for the wedding! It seemed so far away, and now here it is! It sounds like you will have perfect weather. Perfect wedding weather for me is about 80F, partly cloudy (big puffy clouds) skies. The weather the day I got married was about 100F, way too hot, people got sunburned because it was outside.
Yes 100F is a bit hot. I would be a sweaty mess.
