OK, back to Friday’s activities. We began the morning by joining the Fleet Feet Morning Miles run. It was a fun way to start the day but given what was coming next it would have been good for me to run further than 3km.
I told you we love food tours … and there’s even more to come. Today’s, Best of Brooklyn 1/2 Day Food and Cultural Tour was a bit different, being a bus tour, which made it perfect for us, since G was serious about resting his legs before the big race. We met the guide in the West Village. Driving through Manhattan we got some good commentary on the various places we passed through.
Brooklyn is massive so doing it by bus meant we could see a few different areas. Our stops were:
- Falafel and Shawarma at Oasis of n Williamsburg
- Pierogi (polish dumplings) at Pierozek in Greenpoint
- Rugalech at Russ and Daughters at the Brooklyn Navy Yard
- Coal fired pizza at Table 87 in Gowanus
- Cannoli at Monteleone’s Bakery and Cafe in Carroll Gatdens
- Chocolates at Jacques Torres Chocolates in Dumbo
After the chocolate stop I left the tour so I could explore the waterfront and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. G hopped on the subway to go back to the hotel and put his feet up.
My final stop for the afternoon was the Strand Bookshop. They sell both new and secondhand books. I’ve never been in a bookshop that sells both. When you’re looking for a book they have the old and new copies together which is so convenient.
G was well into carb-loading so dinner was a massive plate of spaghetti and meatballs to share at Tony’s

I have never heard of a book store that sells new and used copies. What an interesting concept though. Did you buy anything?
I bought a secondhand copy of The Catcher in the Rye.
I love that you took advantage and did the Fleet Feet Morning Miles Run. And the food looks amazing.
I don’t think I’ve heard of bookshops that sell new and used books in Germany, but in the US, it seems to be more common.
I was thinking about doing the 5km on the Saturday but it was going to finish too late for me to catch the planned tour, which ended up being cancelled anyway. This was a good way to build up to the race.
I’ve been to several bookstores that sell both new and used books, but they have always been separate (perhaps to avoid confusion regarding pricing?) I hope the run goes well tomorrow!
This one had stickers on every book. I chose the secondhand copy of the Catcher in the Rye but they also had a few new copies.
I’ve never done a food tour, but it sounds delicious. I’ve never been on that street with that perspective of the Empire State. I love NYC and am feeling “homesick” for it right now, even though I have only visited three times.
