Good Things Friday

FRI 20.9.2024

  • I picked up my new phone from the store today. Everything is transferred, and this time, I remembered to get my two-factor authentication working for all my work logins before erasing my old phone. I had the worst time getting all that reset the last time I changed phones.
  • While we were at Southland we got through a lot of the errands on our list and changed the mobiles over to a different carrier that could give us better rates.

SAT 21.9.2024

  • I started the morning with a walk around the Tan, with S meeting me halfway. We followed this up with breakfast with our running club.
  • We took S bed shopping. She’s finally decided to upgrade from her childhood bed. We had a pretty successful time. The mattress is decided and she just needs to decide which bedframe she wants.
  • I got out the sewing machine and zigzagged the fraying edges of one of my favourite winter tops. It worked a treat, and I’m hoping I’ll get a few more years of heavy wear out of this top now.
  • In the evening we went to Mya Tiger at The Espy for S birthday. It was the six of us, including E’s girlfriend. The food was fabulous as always but the pub was pumping and the bass comes up through the floor to the restaurant so it’s a bit hard to hear sometimes. We’re not that into Asian desserts, so we stopped at Bianco Latte in Elwood for gelato. I had the special which was dark chocolate, orange and hazelnut—so good!
Squid ink prawn dumplings (these were very pretty with gold leaf highlighting the folds)

SUN 22.9.2024

  • We went across to Kanteen, near the Yarra, for my walk and G’s run. It was a bit warmer this morning than it has been, and the sun did actually come out for a little while. I had a very pleasant walk and then we met up with the girls and our running friends for breakfast.
  • The girls came back to our place afterwards and hung out. We finished this 1000-piece puzzle. It was a fairly easy one so we got it done over a couple of sessions this week. Afterwards they went back to the start and are redoing the puzzle that we started with in July 2023.

MON 23.9.2024

  • E’s car was sold today, which was a relief. If it didn’t get done we would have to restart the selling process after we got back from our holiday, including getting the roadworthy again.
  • The girls came over for dinner and took Riley home with them. It is so good to have somewhere for Riley to stay when we are away. He used to pick up some kind of sickness every second time he went to the kennel.
  • We were watching Ted Lasso, and there was one part where I could not stop laughing; I’m still giggling now when I think about the scene (for those who watch, 3rd season where they’re learning the new style and Roy puts the red string to work). It got me thinking about how often I used to laugh like that, or even to the point of crying, I’m sure it must have been at least once a week, but now it is much rarer. I mean, I still laugh a lot, but that can’t stop laughing feeling—much less often. It feels good, but it’s not like you can make it happen.

TUES 24.9.2024

  • G has started randomly announcing how long until we go away. Usually in days but sometimes in hours. I think he’s excited.
  • We had our small group over for dinner, which included partners and our vicar. E was also home. It was also one of the members’ birthdays, so we had a birthday cake and put up a Happy Birthday banner. It was a great night, with twelve of us squeezed around our dining room table.

WED 25.9.2024

  • Today was the day for packing and cleaning. I feel much better about getting everything done before we go away than I was on Monday.
  • I also had a hard, but not so hard it wrecked me, session of 3:1 strength training.
  • We had leftover BBQ meat from the night before, roasted some beetroot to make a salad with the oranges that had been floating round the fridge for a month, and fried up leftover roast sweet and normal potatoes from Monday. It was so satisfying rustling up a meal from what was in the fridge. Not having to go to the shops and emptying the fridge for the win. Now there is just a small amount of food left in there that I will turn into tomorrow’s lunch.

THURS 26.9.2024

  • I started the day with prayer with my friend from church. We did some hard work, there may have been some ugly crying involved, but I think I should see a bit of movement in some areas I’ve been stuck in. I’m looking forward to some time away to consolidate.
  • This evening we went out with four friends from running group. It was steak night at the Botanical—$28 for rump steak with fries, salad, pepper sauce, a glass of wine and good bread. The steak was cooked perfectly, and everything was a notch above the standard pub fare. We came away very happy at such good value food. Had some great conversation too!

That’s it from me. How’s your week been?

  1. What a great week.
That gelato looks and sounds amazing! And what an interesting shape of puzzle – it looks like a pano. (It also looks very difficult to me; I am forever amazed by your puzzle genius).
That’s so fun that G has a countdown to your trip. I can’t wait to hear all about it.
I absolutely love finishing up the last of things in the fridge before a trip. It’s nice to start with a fresh slate when we come home and it feels so satisfying to gauge just how much food we’ll need before we leave. It feels like a sort of game…

    1. The fridge clearing is a bit of a game for me too. The gelato was fabulous, very rich though.

  2. Yum!! That gelato looks amazing! That is my kind of dessert! I love how many puzzles you do as a family. Puzzles are a seasonal thing for me as I feel more drawn to them during the cold weather months. Those months are just around the corner so soon I will be puzzling – but I have to do it on a puzzle mat that I can tuck away during the day. Otherwise I fear our toddler would walk off with pieces.

    1. Yes, puzzles with a toddler around would be much more difficult. Puzzle mats are great though.

  3. You’re truly the puzzle masters! So many puzzles and what an amazing image. I love that it’s an unconventional size (which reminds me that I still have a pano puzzle of the Boston Skyline in my closet that I want to do one of these days!).

    1. We’ve done a couple of the pano ones (the 4000-piece was a pano).

  4. Ahhh that silly laugh… where you can’t stop and keep going and it’s all spiraling. These are so good but so rare now. During teenage years it feels like there was no other way. Happy you had that.

  5. I liked what you said about the hard work that was done during prayer. A lot like a good therapy session, I’m guessing.

I also really like cleaning out the fridge before a trip. It is satisfying for sure.

I hope you have a fabulous time on your trip, glad that your dog is safe while you’re gone, and wishing you safe travels. Glad you had a good laugh!
