London Day 4: Marathon Expo, Tate Modern and pottering around in Soho

Thursday 24th April

We started our day back at the Victoria Coffee Shop for breakfast before heading out to the London Marathon Expo so G could pick up his bib. There was a big line in front of the official logo area for taking photos but we walked past this wall, there were no people, so I got G to quickly get a photo. G almost had an epic stuff-up with the marathon. When you pick up your bib they print it right there, when G went to pick up his T-shirt the people there noticed that his didn’t have a timer chip on his bib. The person who printed it had forgotten to put it on before they gave it to him! Lucky the T-shirt person noticed. Imagine running the whole marathon and not getting a finishing time—not OK.

Once we’d looked at everything and got a timer chip attached to G’s bib we caught the train to Canary Wharf and transferred to the ferry. G was going to be spending most his time in our hotel room off his feet and I thought this was a good way for him to be out and about without walking too much. I really enjoyed seeing London from the river, so from my point of view, it was a win.

Tower of London from the ferry
The Millennium Bridge and St Paul’s from across the river

I got off near the Tate Modern while G continued on to Embankment which was a tube ride from our hotel. I spent an hour or so wandering around the Tate Modern. They have 10 minute talks by volunteers at particular paintings and I happened upon one. The guy who did the talk was certainly passionate about art. I think it’s always good to listen to someone who is so passionate about their topic. I only have one photo to share which is of the freakish nightmare-inducing sculpture in one of the atriums which I’ll include here so you can all have giant spider nightmares too.

I mean really??

Afterwards I got lost in the Blackfriars station before extricating myself and making my way to Soho. I know a few of my readers are stationary fans so I will treat you to some photos of the piles of stationary at Choosing Keeping. While there I got myself a new journal to use once my current one is filled up. It’s the red one below and has my preferred grid pages.

I consulted my google map where I’d saved various places of interest and found I was just round the corner from Udderlicious so I decided I just had to treat myself to an ice cream cone, especially since the sun was out and shining. I chose biscoff and honeycomb—I do find it hard to go past anything honeycomb. It was yummy.

Dinner was udon noodles at Udon Maragame, which satisfied G’s carb loading requirements so we ate together.

  1. Eeks. There used to be a spider like that in a gallery in Ottawa. I wonder if it’s still there. And I wonder if there’s a connection?

The ice cream sounds delicious! Great choices 🙂

    1. That’s interesting about another sculpture like this. Maybe the same person, or two people both had the same idea

  2. Oooh what yummy ice cream!
What Elisabeth said about the spider! I saw it in Ottawa last year. At first I thought maybe it was in Montreal but I will defer to Elisabeth. My husband hates spiders so I don’t have a photo of it, I’ll just have to remember it with my heart. Lol!

    1. I hate spiders too! I really detest the scenes like in Harry Potter with the giant spiders

  3. Thats a creepy piece of art right there.
I love using a boat to explore a city. It’s always such a different view.
Yum. Always here for ice cream.

  4. LONDON!!!!!!
I lived in London when I was 16 for 6 months – went to a school to advance my English there. I LOVE that city. I have been there in 2010 last in winter. I love it there so much.
That must be Louise Bourgeois “Maman” – there is a spider like that in Guggenheim Bilbao a smaller one in Louisiana Museum of Art in Denmark. Her mom loved to knit and that is why she is mainly represented as a spider 😉 Plus, their relationship, of course.
