Wales Day 11: Four Waterfalls Walk

Monday 12th May 2025

Today we checked out of the Priory and headed towards Brecon. On our way to the Four Waterfalls Walk we picked up rolls and water from Pret-a-Manger and fruit and muesli bars from the supermarket for our picnic lunch. We parked at the Cwm Porth Carpark. This walk is in the Brecon Beacons National Park and there is a wardens office and toilets at this carpark. It’s worth popping in an chatting to the warden who can get you started in the right direction.

Most of the walk is on fairly wide, level, gravel paths through farmland and forest. The offshoots to the waterfalls were steeper with lots of steps for some and rougher rocky sections. On the last waterfall you can walk behind the water which was pretty cool. The walk took about three hours including our lunch break. The only downer was the rubbish, including many dog poo bags. We don’t have the dog poo issue in Australian National Parks because dogs are not allowed. Chatting to the warden at the end of our walk, he thinks the pile of dog poo bags is a protest at the national park not providing bins. Some people have such entitled attitudes. The cost of getting rubbish service into these remote areas is substantial and it’s really not too much to ask people to carry their rubbish out. GRRR! Anyway, moving on, here’s some pretty pictures (do not ask me how these names are pronounced):

Waterfall 1: Sgwd Clun-gwyn
Waterfall 2: Sgwd Isaf Clun-gwyn
Waterfall 3: Sgwd y Pannwr
Waterfall 4: Sgwd yr Eira

We took the non-scenic main road to Brecon because G needed a break from driving on tiny narrow roads. Our house in Brecon was quite cute. It was right on the canal and had a beautiful sun room where we spent a bit of time relaxing and watching the comings and goings. The street dead-ended at the canal. When we initially arrived there was there was just enough room for G to do a fifty point turn and park in front of our house so he could drive out of the street, most of the time though, other parked cars would have meant reversing all the way back up the street, so after the first day, we parked in the main street and walked to the house which wasn’t too far. When we walked out to find dinner, the pub we hoped to go to was fully booked so we kept walking and ended up at a not so great pub. I ordered the lasagna, but G tried to order two dishes only to find they were sold out, before the waitress began to list everything else they were sold out of so G ended up having the lasagna as well. The lasagna was fine. After dinner we sat in the sun room and were entertained by what looked like a school group of teenagers canoeing very badly past us. There was also one particular duck that was going after any dogs being walked along the canal. Who needs TV!

  1. What a fantastic day! The waterfalls sound amazing, especially being able to walk behind one of them. Such a shame about the rubbish though – I can’t get my head around people thinking it’s someone else’s job to clean up after them.

Your canal house in Brecon sounds perfect, though. The scenes are definitely better than TV!

    1. The rubbish really annoyed me.

  2. I cannot BELIEVE how ignorant some people are – garbage??? That makes me so mad.
I love waterfalls and now I’m singing “don’t go chasing waterfalls” to myself.

    1. I know, the garbage is just so annoying. Many National Parks in Australia you have to carry everything out.

  3. Oh I feel you on the garbage.
On Thursday I came by a pile of dog poop bags right at the crossroad. Some people can not even bothered to take it the next street over.
On my long walks on Saturday I walk by an area where people wild camp. And of course the left al their trash there. I walked by them when they were there and the following week just the trash. I know it’s there because I was thinking about telling them to take it with them. I had a feeling but didnt want to be a Karen. Why…. I don’t get it. Yesterday I was really thinking about taking garbage bag next week and hauling it back 2 km because it does bother me that much. But I have it and it makes me angry.

Well, all that said: the views are gorgeous and the hike must be wonderful in the lush green forest.

    1. It’s so rude of people to leave a mess. Other people also want to enjoy the beauty and nature.
