I’ve picked words to define my year before and followed through with varying degrees of success. Looking back at my old blog reminded me of what I had picked in previous years—Habit (2015), Intention (2014), Act (2010) and Breathe (2007). I had no intention of picking a word for 2024 until one day at the end of November while listening to the Rebuilders podcast they began talking about renewal. This year has been a good one, we have had some exciting travels, and we’ve settled into our new home, neighbourhood and church, but we’ve also had some stressful family dynamics (largely resolved now) and I have had some niggling health issues. I’m feeling a bit tired and like there are areas of my life that need renewal after the upheaval of COVID. The word renewal grabbed my attention and hasn’t let me go. I’m taking it as a God moment and claiming renewal as my defining word for 2024.

I love that!!! I am still in process… My 2023 was “health” and my 2022 was… “move”? I think? 2021 was “covid will not stop me” lol a phrase, not a word. I have had a wonderful year, with minor complaints, but, really if I compare what other people are going through right now… Very minor.
I look forward to hearing what word finds you for 2024.
Love. this! I don’t have a word for 2024, but I am claiming it to be my Year of Shmita, so I’d like to lean into that concept and practice some Sabbath things – abstaining from phone use most weekends, resting more on Sundays, praying more. I also am releasing myself from setting specific goals.
It feels weird to head into a year without clean intentions, but I think that a year of rest is both God-ordained AND much-needed. So I’m excited, if slightly nervous. Will I fritter the year away? Will I feel no more refreshed mentally and physically at the end of it? I’m not sure, but it’s sure to be an adventure!
Renewal is such an incredible concept and word. I look forward to following along with your journey.
Your Year of Shmita will be amazing. Rest is good. Intentional rest, even better.
I like the word you picked for the new year. I think renewal is such a strong word in so many regards. I hope we get to renew some things (personally and globally!).
I haven’t picked a word for 2024 yet. We’ll see if something “comes to me”.
Oh what a great word. I like it.
And I can see it working in your current situation (as much as one can gather from the blog).
It is a bit similiar to my word. Or maybe that is just the glasses I am wearing. But moving and struggles and tiredness and health things made me come up with SHAPE to get to a new level.
Looking forward following your journey and what this word will provide for you.
Happy New Year Melissa
THank-you, yes I think we will be on similar paths this year.
