Good Things Friday

Recapping all the good things from this week …

WE FINISHED THE PUZZLE

The girls popped over on Saturday and we finished off the 3000-piece puzzle. I had to get our mini-step ladder out to get this photo.

SUNDAY MORNING RUN

I did my long run on Saturday morning so I could go to church on Sunday morning (we usually go in the evening). I knew I could get up at my normal time and still squeeze in the 6 km before 9 am church. The conditions were stunning, I had to stop for a photo along the Elstern Canal just near us.

FOUR-DAY WORK WEEK

Hubby just changed to a four-day work week which meant we had time on Monday to knock over the Christmas shopping.

CLEARING THE DECKS

I got the last few things I needed to do for our mainly music group finished on Monday. Now we wait for approval. I also tidied up my outstanding work and helped E get his tax stuff together, so I’m all ready for some relaxation. I shouldn’t have to do any work until mid-next week and that will hopefully just be a couple of hours making supplier payments.

RIDING MY BIKE

I’ve taken it on a few errands now. I’m still getting used to riding in traffic but today I rode down to Hampton, mainly along the beach path. I wanted to have a bit of a workout so I left the assist off. Coming back I thought to myself “Hey, this is fun, I’m enjoying this.” I’m sure my enjoyment will increase as I get more confident riding.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

On Tuesday night our running club had their annual Christmas Relays. We’ve done it for several years now. You have teams of three and each person runs two 1 km legs. I’m very unfit at the moment, and carrying a little extra. but I managed to just squeak in under 5 min, so not too awful. Hubby our daughter and I formed a team, which was fun. They had 66 runners on the night, so it was a good turnout. Afterwards, we all went to a local pub for dinner. It was Parma night, so of course that’s what I chose. It was massive, but I managed to finish the parma and the coleslaw, but left most of the chips. I washed it down with Heaps Normal, a non-alcoholic beer.

FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURS

The couple in the apartment above us organised last-minute drinks at their place for everyone in our building. We went up after dinner on Wednesday and had a lovely evening catching up and getting to know some of the newer residents.

BONUS GOOD THINGS

  • Cherry season. Do I need to add anything else?
  • Our son’s girlfriend will be able to join us for Christmas lunch after all.
  • The library. This will probably pop up semi-regularly.
  • A couple of vegetarian dinners to balance out the Parma.

What seasonal food do you look forward to? How has your week been? Do you feel “ready” for Christmas?

The puzzle is gorgeous! I’ve never done anything more than a 1,000 piece so I’m not sure if I *could* do this but it would be so fun to try. I’d need a bigger puzzle board, that’s for sure;-)

That pub meal tho! If I had been there I would have cleaned my plate too!

    • Melissa

Yes, you need a big board or matt unless you have a table that you never use. Our table seats ten so the puzzle can usually stay on the tabel unless we have guests.

Oh I love fresh cherries <3

I feel mostly ready for Christmas. I'm tired. It has been "a year" and there is always a bit of crash-and-burn after such a busy stretch, but I've been more intentional about what I do/don't do and I think I'm as ready as I'll ever be (an extra week to just sleep would be nice!).

3,000 pieces. I would find a tall building and jump right off the top if I had to make a puzzle that big. Shudder! I really love the 200-piece ones. Anything beyond that and I'm really out of my depth/patience quotient.

    • Melissa

Well there were three of us so that’s about 1000 pieces each, altohugh my eldest daughter probably does more than the rest of us. She prefers 2000 or bigger.

I love cherries!!! They do not sit well with my stomach but I still eat them, becasue… I love them!
Seasonal foods I look forward to… Yams with marshmallows (November), watermelons (August), cherries and peaches (July), pumpkin coffee (October). Fresh corn! -July. Honey crisp apples- October.
I’ve been ready for Christmas since the second week of December 🙂 It’s small in our family.

    • Melissa

Oh yes, I love cheese and all things dairy but can’t eat too much because I get hives. sometimes though I’ll just go for it and suffer the consequnces. It looks like you have your seasonal foods all worked out!

  • San

Looks like a beautiful day for a run. And I love fresh cherries.
I also love that your husband switched to a four-day work week. I’ve been working a four-day week forever and wouldn’t change it back to five-days for the world.

I wish he had worked a four day work week when the kids were younger, but it’s a good cultural change that shorter work weeks are getting more traction.
