Nature,  Running,  The Neighbourhood

Detouring from my usual paths

To get my project of running every street in a 5km radius of our house kick-started again, I added some detours to my usual run along the beach path. I found a couple more cut-throughs to the beach from some of the local roads. I also ran along the opposite side of the Elwood Canal. I enjoyed seeing a cheeky white cockatoo doing acrobatics from the power line before flying off to join its mates, feeding in the dry canal overflow.

Blanketing the fence near the primary school was an overgrown passionfruit vine covered in flowers. Unfortunately, it looks like a sucker, but I will pop back there periodically; maybe there is some fruiting vine mixed in there, too, and I’ll get lucky and find some fruit. How spectacular are the flowers, though!

With a few more detours around our local streets on my way home, the CityStrides website tells me I completed three more streets and made progress on another fourteen this morning.

Do you have any spots in your neighbourhood where you can do some wild foraging? The most I’ve managed so far is some rosemary.

I love the idea of running every path in a 5km radius…. it’s funny how we always run the same routes, when there is so much to see in such close proximity from your home.
I had started running all streets in our neighborhood, but fell off the bandwagon… I should try and finish this sometime. Thanks for the reminder!

What a neat idea to run every street in your neighborhood.
I try to take different routes when walking familiar places if I have time.

I used to do a lot of foraging in my old neighborhood. In the new one I still need to get the lay of land. I have almost a season completed but it is much. harder to find things here even though I live much more in nature and greenery. But places here are more groomed so it is harder.

That passion fruit blossom is looking reallylovely.

It takes time to get to know a new neighbourhood, and I can see how a wilder landscape offers more opportunities for foraging. I did find a lemon tree this week which is hanging over a back fence so I’ll pop back there in a bit to see if they’re ripening.
