Five on Friday

I hadn’t got to inbox zero since before Christmas so Tuesday night after dinner I sat down with my computer and did a big clearout. I had 185 emails in my promotions folder and the vast majority of those emails were from a handful of senders so I got busy unsubscribing. Hopefully it sticks and I have less clutter going forward. Today I only had 1 email in my promotions folder and that was from Blurb which I always stay subscribed to so I can get their discount codes.

Another major clogger of my inbox are daily share tracking emails form our bank. I need to see if G gets these or needs them. Hopefully I can unsubscribe from them as well. Speaking of banks I have a weekly email that comes through telling me I have a rejected payment because I forgot to cancel a weekly withdrawal from an account before I closed it. Since the account is now closed the scheduled payment isn’t showing up on my list of payments so I can’t cancel it, but I still get the emails. At some stage I will have to deal with this but it means dealing with the bank. I should find our banker’s email address and see if she can sort it.

We had not had any real beach days yet this summer. I usually need it to be over 30C (86F) to go swimming but it was 42C (107F) on Wednesday, and so, once I’d finished my work for the day, I wandered down to the beach. It is was stinking hot out there (the bottom of my feet started to burn when I was hanging out the washing) and it was cool inside, but if I didn’t go then would I have got another chance while I was at Point Lonsdale? Happily, as I was walking, the wind changed as the temperature dropped nine degrees—so still above my beach threshold, but much more pleasant.

The water was 17C and I was gingerly doing a gradual entry when a smaller wave dumped me under the water. I guess that got me fully wet at least and the water was lovely once I was in. I just had my swim and then went straight home because it was getting close to dinner time.

We drove down to our friend’s place at Lorne yesterday to do the Mountain to Surf race this morning, but we were eating lunch when we all got texts that the race was cancelled. The forecast was for catastrophic fire danger and the National Park where part of the course is was going to be closed. Pretty disappointing, but understandable. We arrived in Lorne at 4 pm and picked up our T-shirts and useless BIBs. The T-shirts this year are purple.

We needed to kill some time after picking up our T-shirts and G had noticed that is was happy hour at the beachside bar so we rolled in there and had a drink. While we were there the shark siren went off and everyone had to leave the water. Watch this space to see whether the Pier to Pub that is scheduled for tomorrow get’s cancelled if the shark comes back. It was in the area on Tuesday as well.

This morning we woke up and went down to the beach to do a run along the coast trail—8K easy—then my friend talked me into going up in the cherry picker since there were no lines at that time. Citipower is a sponsor and they bring the cherry pickers down each year. We had to wear harnesses and be clipped in, and although I don’t love heights it was OK. The view was great and it was a bit of fun.

Do you like heights? Who clutters up your inbox?

  1. So sorry about the cancelled race! I googled the event and saw it is an 8km course linked to Saturday’s Pier to Pub swim, which explains the Friday timing.

I love an empty inbox! As a minimalist, I aggressively unsubscribed from everything non-essential years ago and it has been magical. I do the same with physical post. It is amazing how much it simplifies life!

    1. Yes, Friday is a funny day for a race, but a lot of people are still on holidays then. I keep unsubscribing from email lists, but it feels like they just keep coming. I need to keep on top of it.

  2. Bummer about the cancelled race. I’m trying to wrap my brain around living near a spot with shark sightings. Yikes.

I do OK with heights. Right now EVERYONE fills my in box. I really need to devote some time to dumping 70k emails. Good grief.

    1. Lorne is a few hours from us, but sharks do come in the bay, just not 4 m ones like the one down there.

  3. Wow that is hot!! I can see why it needs to be quite hot to swim because that is some cold water!! I bet it is so refreshing on those hot days!

I am so so with heights. They don’t terrify me but I don’t seek them out. Like I can’t handle cliff jumps into water! But I can do things high up as long as I feel safe.

    1. I think the feeling safe is important. I don’t do think I could do cliff jumps either.

  4. FORTY TWO DEGREES!!!! Yes, I’d say that’s beach temperature for sure. I always try to dunk myself instead of gingerly getting into the water because once you’re in, it’s nice.
I need to take a page from your book and just unsubscribe. I generally just “select all” and then delete when it comes to promotions but why don’t I just…limit the promotions in the first place? Maybe that will be a goal this weekend. I literally never look at any of those emails so they are just wasted space.

    1. I know getting in quickly is better, but it’s hard in the moment. I do a lot of select all and delete, usually too, but every now and then, I try to stop them from even landing in my inbox.

  5. I try to unsubscribe, but I still get SO MANY emails every day.

Wow, 107 is HOT. I’m not sure I would have left the house. But for the ocean and a swim, maybe! Wild fires and sharks..quite a dramatic weekend. I mean, not really since the result was a drink at a pub, but still. Sounds dramatic.

    1. There are some emails in my inbox again that need to be unsubscribed from. I probably should keep a record to see if they keep sending them after I’ve unsubscribed. I so, I will mark them as spam which will serve them right.

  6. I get so many emails.
Most thing is some double authentication for a billion apps and software I use. Everyone is telling me stuff I already know. Yes it was my device signing in. It is so so annoying.

    Sorry for your canceled race.

    1. Email junk is serious downside to modern life.

  7. Uff. Inbox Zero is so hard for me to get to – I get so many “unwanted” emails (I realize, I once signed up for them one way or another).I’ll have to dedicate some time to get through that. Good for you for trying to reduce the clutter.

    1. It builds up so quickly. I almost need to go back and unsubscribe some more!
