Games Night

This is the furthest we all progressed before dying. I was purple.

We had games night on Saturday. Have a games night has languished undone on my 101 list since I made it in September 2023. Three weeks ago we were having family dinner and the topic got on to games nights and we decided to have a family games night. E and K have a good selection of games because they play a lot with their friends and S has an organised games night with her friends every few months. G was away that night, but the kids and I decided to set a date and checked the AFL fixture so we made sure we did not pick a date when G’s team, Collingwood, was playing. What I forgot about was his mates weekend, so he ended up missing games night anyway.

We selected a variety of games that we could play with five people. I organised a mixed box a Maki and Inari for dinner, and cooked Spinach Ohitashi and some dumplings. We followed it up with mint chip icecream. To set the mood I also made a new playlist called Games Night and finally worked out how to play music from my iPhone through the soundbar in the living room without turning on the TV. We actually started games night at 4 pm to give us plenty of time to play the games and finish at a reasonable hour. There was one non-negotiable rule—no Monopoly!

E and K had a new game called Selfish: Space Edition. This is a card game where you’re trying to reach the space ship before you run out of oxygen. None of us made it. This was a fun, quick game where you pick up cards and use them to attack others or protect yourself. Oxygen cards are required to stay alive.

The second game we played was Space Base. I think we’ve had this for about 8 years now—it was a family Christmas present one year. In this game everyone takes on the role of Commodore of a fleet of ships. The active player rolls the dice and earns rewards according to the ships on their board or deployed in each sector but the other players can also score points if they have ships deployed in the sectors that match the dice. This is a strategy game and it took us a number of hours to complete. S won this one.

We had a small amount of time left after we’d finished Space Base so we played multiple rounds of Code Names. We played E and K’s version which is the original but we have the pictures edition which was another family Christmas present. For this there are two teams and you are trying to uncover your teams secret agents without uncovering the assassin. Agents, bystanders and the assassin are all represented by cards with a single word on it. 25 cards are arranged in a grid and the spymaster on each team knows where their agents are and has to give a one word clue to their team so they can uncover their agents. It can be really difficult to find a clue to uncover more than one agent in a turn, which is what allows you to stay ahead of the other team. Each round of this is pretty quick so we had time to play multiple rounds, swapping teams and spy masters each time.

Games night was a success and I think we will be doing it again! Do you like board games. Do you get a chance to play very often? What are your favourite board games?

  1. I WANT to like games, and definitely did as a kid, but I’d rather read a book now 🙂
My kids like games, but we mostly stick with quick card games.
I have some extended family and friends that LOVE games, though. I think they’re a great bonding experience and do wish I enjoyed them more as an adult.

    1. Maybe you just haven’t found the right game?? I like them for the social aspect; it’s a little like our puzzle-making as well but when the kids were younger and my personal time was more limited I might have also chosen the book instead of a game. We started getting a family present for all of us when the kids were high school age and that was usually a board game because it does kind of get important to find things to do as a family.

  2. That sounds like a lot of fun!! I love playing board games but nobody I know likes it! I got Kai to play chess a few times, let’s see how far I can push it! 😂

    1. Chess is a hard one. We often play Bananagrams when we travel with our running friends, which is quick and easy to jump in and out of. You might need to suss out some of your acquaintances to see whether they could be game playing buddies.

  3. I love games, my favourite is Mexican Train! We just played it with our friends a few nights ago, and a few weeks ago I had the girls over for a game and margaritas. It’s such a fun game because you can have various numbers of players.

  4. I love playing games and I love game nights! I was so glad when my kids reached an age that they could start to play some basic board games. My favorite for young kids is “My First Orchard Game” as it’s a cooperative game so there’s no fits when someone loses. I will not play Chutes & Ladders or Candyland. I hate games that can start over and over and over again. The boys are really into card games, too. Our youngest in particular loves this game called “garbage”. We had some extended family over last weekend and he taught his Godfather how to play which was really cute.

We try to have game nights with other families throughout the year – the kids watch a movie and the adults play games. We had one 2 weeks ago and played Wits & Wagers (which I am terrible at) and a couple other newer games I hadn’t heard of before.

    1. My kids used to enjoy lots of games when they were kids, too. One of their favourites when they were primary school age was Forbidden Island, so much so, that they made up a real life version to play in the garden and at the beach.

  5. How fun! I used to love game nights, but don’t get the chance very often. The last time we had a game night was when I visited my family in Germany last year. We played Hitster! So fun.

    1. It can be hard to get a group of people who like playing games. We sometimes play games over the Christmas holidays with the extended family, but not everyone likes them.

  6. I used to have regular game nights with friends and my family was big in games. We often went hiking with a game in the backpack we would play during breaks. These days we usually only play games on Christmas with my dad.

It sounds fun. Maybe I need to bring it back.

    1. When we go away with running friends we usually pay bananagrams which is easy to pack.

  7. I am ALL ABOUT game nights! We do them every other Saturday with my brother, my mom, and my nephews (ages 17 and 11 – the older one comes sporadically, now that he’s working) and we do all sorts of board/card/dice games. Our favorites are Scattegories, Qwixx, What Do You Meme? (we play the family version so it’s safe for the younger kiddo), and Five Second Rule.

    1. I haven’t played Scattergories for ages. Will have to pull it out.

  8. I keep wanting to try code names and haven’t gotten around to it, but I’ve heard so many people talk about it! The space one sounds pretty interesting, might be worth looking into it too.

For lots of reasons we brought in a tech ban at home for my son, where he only gets to use tech Friday nights, and on the weekends. Thats meant that we play board games more often now, and one of the most fun ones we’ve discovered is one called “Sequence”. It was actually recommended to us by a nurse during a hospital visit when my son had some high fevers. It’s fantastic! Imagine connect 4 meets poker (but you’re aiming for 5 in a row).

    1. Another game to add to my list of possible acquisitions!
