Melbourne has been living up to its reputation for unpredictable weather. Last Thursday, we had a top of 35C and a low of 23C, which made my morning run hot and sweaty. On Sunday, we had a top of 19C, yep, it didn’t even make Thursday’s lowest temperature. Sunday also happened to be the day of Carmen’s Fun Run. It was 9C in the morning, and we had a strong headwind heading out from the start line. About 3 kilometres in, running up a hill into the wind, it started to rain and then hail (luckily, they were only small hailstones). Let’s just say I was very happy to get to the turnaround and put that at my back, although I couldn’t dry off my glasses because my clothes were all wet. I was reasonably happy with my run, meeting my downgraded target pace and not walking, but I have a fair way to go until I return to my previous fitness.

The run starts and finishes 600 m from our house, so our friends and family use our place as a bag drop and toilet stop, and then we all meet back after our runs for brunch. We had fruit, granola and yoghurt and bacon, egg and hashbrowns muffins. Washed down with orange juice, coffee and some champagne. This is our second year hosting everyone, and I think it has become a tradition.

Riley turned 10 on Valentine’s Day. Can I say that having his birthday on a “special” day at least means I can remember it? He was very happy with his walk in the park, especially since he had been stuck at home the previous days because it was so hot.

I’ve been going through the kids’ boxes of stuff and scanning some of it for inclusion in their photobooks before I hand everything over to them. I found this piece of work by my daughter. I don’t have many pieces like this but they are always so fun to read:
The Best Day:
- I woke up and played my DS. The game was called Nintendo dogs.
- Mum and dad woke us up and we ate breakfast. After that we got ready and skied off to class.
- For our warm up we skied down Wombat’s Ramble. When I ski down Wombat’s I always ski up hills and around trees
- Then we went inside for a Milo. Then we went back outside to ski
- We skied down Fox Trail and Last Hoot. It was our first time we ever skied down those runs.
- We went inside for lunch. It was nuggets and chips. It was yummy.
If you have kids do you keep some of their schoolwork? Do you have any of your own schoolwork?

I don’t have any of my schoolwork but my kids each have a large bin full of their “special things”!
It has been so cold and windy here. We are on our fourth day of school closures due to weather. I am so tired of our Canadian winter right now!
What a great post-race tradition to host people. Love that it has seamlessly become part of the routine.
Talk about weather … it’s the middle of winter here and the temp can swing from MINUS 30+ to an almost balmy minus 8. I’ll take your weather any day! 😉
I won’t be swapping with you!
Aww, shame. I could do with a bit of sun right about now. Ha! Ha!
I love the child project/update. So cute and fun to look back at. A few years ago, well pre-pandemic so maybe like 8 years ago – I went thru all the saved stuff and I organized it into different boxes labeled by each kid’s name. I kept out my favorite projects and made enormous poster sized collages of them and put them in poster sized frames. Then we hung them in the stairway leading to the basement. I decided they were much more fun to look at all the time vs once in a blue moon.
Also, my son’s dog, Ronan turned two on Valentine’s Day. Ha!
Your new tradition sounds like great fun.
Well, that race sounds… fun? Except for the hail??? Your breakfast looks yummy at least!
I LOVE kids’ schoolwork like that! I have some of my kids, and also some little stories I wrote and illustrated when I was little- they are “special,” lol.
It’s so funny to look back and read some of what they thought
