I’d originally thought we might head off to a festival in St Goar with fireworks, food and music on the Saturday but we were both pretty tired and not feeling 100%, so we ditched that plan and decided to just go to Marksburg Castle during the day. It was a longish trip by public transport because we had to go by train to Koblenz and then catch a bus replacement back out on the other side of the river to Baubach. The English language tours are at 1 pm so we had a relaxed start to the day and I took a bit of time to pop into Liebfrauenkirche at Oberwesel while G got a coffee.

Baubach was a pretty cute town as well, it seems like most are but we didn’t hang around before starting our climb to the castle which was, once again, very steep.

Entry to the castle is by guided tour only. The tour takes in various parts of the castle, including the little garden, the battery, kitchen, Great Hall and bedchambers. The rooms have been decked out with period appropriate furniture. Marksburg is one of only two castles along this stretch of the Rhine that had never been destroyed and the only one that didn’t fall into disrepair. It has been occupied by several different families. It was used as a prison and hospital, then in 1900 sold to the German Castle Association which still looks after it.

After our tour we headed back down the hill and to a cafe in the town for a light lunch. We were back at our hotel around 4:30 pm and had a rest before strolling across the courtyard for dinner, then a early night.
