Time Logging July 2026

I put on my list to time track five times and I thought it might be interesting to do one of those weeks while we are in Noosa. We are away, but not on holiday as such, so there is still some normal rhythm to our days. Once again I used my trusty spreadsheet to produce some nifty pie charts so I can compare with my last foray into time tracking. This was last week 13th – 19th July. Our daughter was staying with us until Saturday and then E and K came and stayed.

This week I slept more and I was more sedentary. I had some naps last week and I went to bed earlier on Sunday because I got a migraine after dinner. We also did a lot more socialising around the table and puzzling. The apartment comes with a weekly clean as well so I have fewer household chores and no gardening.

Compared with last time I had more paid work because I have some special projects I’m working on, although I did work less last week than I have been doing because of our daughter staying with us. I had a miniscule amount of ministry time which would have been nil, if not for a report we had to put together for the quarterly ministry lead meeting. As expected I had less time on household chores and more personal time available.

Next is the breakdown of my active time. I’m not sure why there was more personal care time, possible due to needing more showers because I did exercise most mornings and we did go out one day for lunch so I blow dried my hair and put on makeup. I had a big increase in running, from 4% to 21%. I was sick for part of the week last time so I only did 1.6 hours of running and this week I am also a fair way into my marathon training and had 6 hours of running. There was obviously no walking of Riley, but most of that time was taken up with the active transport category. Strength training is similar and mobility is a bit less which is disappointing because I do want to get that up a bit, although I must admit I haven’t been making a massive effort to do so.

The biggest change was the social category 33%, up from 10% last time. This was largely due to having the kids staying with us, plus we had my parents over for dinner one night before they left for home and I rang my sister and had a long chat on Sunday. I count eating together, puzzling together and also walking to and from social outings in my social category. Prayer/church was down because I’m away from church. Running is up, while writing was down, I guess something needs to give.

Finally the reading category was heavily weighted to fiction. I had a loan that was going to end on Sunday night and it was a substantial read so I spent a lot of time reading the fiction and neglected my non-fiction. The reading adjacent category was me getting the highlights on a side-loaded library book synced to my Readwise account. I also had less online reading, sorry to my fellow bloggers out there. This explains why I now have 139 unread posts in my Reader. I might need to take the nuclear option soon and hit read all.

And one final extra breakdown of my time into indoor and outdoor time. For this I included my hours sleeping. 11% works out to 2.64 hours outside each day so exceeding my target of an average of 2 hours outside everyday. Although more is always better.

Are your weeks generally the same or do you does your focus necessarily fluctuate between different areas of life?

  1. My weeks are really different during the summer. During the school year – when I’ve got daycare kids here, it’s hectic but there’s always nap time. Summer – well, some days are a little quiet with kids all at work and there are days when it’s just go go go.

    1. It’s weird not having the ebb and flow of the school year now that the kids are all working and out of home.

  2. I would totally “read all” on the blog posts and then catch up with the latest – that’s what I do when I travel and get far behind. I figure I can catch up if need be!
I would say my weeks are pretty similar to each other. There are big chunks that take up the day, and then of course little things. Exercise related things take up one chunk – yoga, workout, dog walk – and then gardening takes up another. Writing and reading take up a big chunk, as does food prep and housework. Personal care probably takes up at least an hour a day! But I consider that mental health self-care.

    1. I did read all, but I make sure to visit my favourites, of which, you are one. I am not fussy with makeup and hair so I was surprised at the time for personal care but it’s good to know when I’m planning out what I can fit in a day. Now I know that’s one hour that I can’t plan to do something else.

  3. You def need to just mark all as read. There’s nothing new in my world!

The weeks when I am not traveling are pretty similar. We have a pretty firm routine since we have young kids and don’t deviate from it typically. When I travel, it’s usually Tues-Thur so there’s a predictable rhythm to them, but where I am changes and I have zero control over my schedule and often don’t know the schedule until the morning of (which I don’t love but so it goes….).

This was a really creative way to break out your time! I do a time study every January. It’s fun to compare how my time usage shifts from year to year.

    1. Since you made your blog private it doesn’t show up in my Reader so I always have to check manually. Hence my sporodic and often multiple comments in one hit. I can imagine it would be fascinating to see how your time use changes over time. I would love to have some from the different stages of mothering to compare.

Every time I see one of your time tracking posts, I tell myself I should do the same!! It would give me some valuable insights.
Of course, your six hours of running stood out to me. Marathon training really becomes the centre of your life for a few months and everything else has to fit around it. Once the marathon has happened, life goes back to normal!

    1. I haven’t yet got into the bigger kilometre weeks yet because of my slow start due to COVID, but am slowly heading towards my previous maximum weekly mileage.

  5. I love the way you have broken this all down! I would love to do time logging more than once a year, but I think that’s my sweet spot and allows me to see how things ebb and flow with my phase of life. I really like how you broke down the reading category!

    1. Doing the time logging is pretty intense. I will only do it once or twice a year.

  6. I would be so curious on how I spend my time. I finished my decluttering and cleaning tasks tonight by 7.30, and was confused on what to do with myself! So ended up laying on the couch and reading and commenting on blog posts (I’m also way behind), but thinking I might go to bed early! Not sure who I am right now haha

    1. Relaxing and early bed are a great way to spend the evening. A gift to tomorrow you!

  7. I said it last time and I say it again: I am fascinated. Just recently it crossed my mind again to do a thing like that. I know I said it last time too (I checked). I am a bit put off by the minuscule tracking though. But it would be so very eyeopening on where I spent my time. I think I do spent more time outside these days as I am working outside these days.

    1. I use the Toggl Track app to keep track, or if I’m off screens that day, just do a running list in my journal. I couldn’t do it for more than a week.
