Good Things Friday

This week will be my busiest week before Christmas. We are in the full swing of Christmas stuff, but things should quiet down after next Tuesday. After that, I’d like to see if we can squeeze in a night visit to the city. On to some good things:

  • Our Christmas Tree is up. Usually, I put it up on the first of December, but this year, we were away. I finally got it up last Saturday, and S and G helped put the decorations on. There was a bit of grumbling, but it hardly took any time for the three of us to do it. When I was tightening the screws in the bottom, one broke off, leaving half in the thread, so the tree is now a little lopsided. I hope we can keep using it. This tree has lasted us over twenty years, and I do not want to get a new one.

  • We finished another puzzle. This wasn’t easy. I was working on the trees on the right, which was more challenging than it looked. I got this from an Op Shop and I decided this was the puzzle’s last hurrah. There were several pieces where the picture had peeled off the cardboard backing and, as you can see, one missing piece.

  • On Saturday night, we went out with the girls for my birthday. We went to Tulum, a Turkish restaurant not far from us. The food was excellent.

  • We had our small group over for a BBQ on Tuesday night as an end-of-year/Christmas celebration. Great times, as usual, and I sent everyone home with a few stalks from our rhubarb plant.
  • We also had a friend over for dinner. He’s going through a tough time, so it was good to be able to host him for dinner.
  • We went to Movida in the city for our work Christmas party. We’ve been once before. It has amazing Spanish food, but we all commented on how expensive the wine was, especially when compared to how much wine cost us recently in Spain. It was very good wine though, and I thoroughly enjoyed my one glass.
  • The city was looking very festive.

  • I have a targeted strength plan now. I went to a physiotherapist, who measured my strength in various muscles. To do this, you are pushing against stationary objects, and the force produced is measured. My calves and quads are under what I need to go longer distances, and my left side is weaker. My hip abductors and adductors were strong enough, but the right was significantly weaker than the left, so I need to work on that. A lot of what I was doing in the gym was good, so I need to add a couple of extra exercises and maybe add one more session initially to build strength before I increase my mileage significantly. I think it was a helpful exercise so I can be more targeted in my gym work—I don’t love weights enough to spend more time on them than I need to. While I was there, he also assessed my running on a treadmill, but he felt there were no apparent problems, so that was good.

Have you ever had a strength assessment like this done? Do you have a flurry of end-of-year activities that tapers off towards Christmas, or are you go, go, go right up to Christmas Day?

  1. That puzzle looks and sounds very difficult! I’m debating if I feel up to bringing out a 300 piece puzzle over Christmas…haha.

    1. Do the puzzle. Do the kids help?

  2. Your tree looks great!
We have a big open house that we host on the 21st, and after that it will be pretty quiet.

    1. I hope yuor open house goes well. It feels nice to have the big things done going into Christmas day.

  3. We have a tree with a bit of a lean, too. I am probably due to get a new one. I have had this one for over 10 years and some of the lights don’t work but I know it will be an expensive purchase. One of these years I will try to get one on sale after Christmas. This isn’t the year for that as we go to my parents on the 26th.

I had a similar assessment from my physio when I was doing PT after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in my left hip. It took a long time to get the muscles to have equal strength. I had a smaller assessment when I was seeing a PT for my pelvic floor after having our second child. It’s good to know what you need to work on. Those imbalances can cause such issues – like my torn labrum! Although part of my issue is an anatomical abnormality. I have a misshapen ball joint in my hip. That plus the imbalance caused the tear.

    1. Our lights are seperate so at least I don’t have that issue. I will try to make this one last. The physio checked my hip range and the right had more which he thinks is caused by the shape of the hip joint too. It is usually that side that I get pain on more often. Hopefully I can build the strength and that will give the joint a bit more stability.

  4. I love your tree! We still don’t have ours up. Hopefully this weekend it will get done.

    1. Putting up the tree can be a bit of a hassle. A few hands make it easier.

  5. I’ve never done an assessment like that, what a good idea. I feel like I’d like to prep for it for a year first though, which is kind of stupid. Do it now, learn what you need to learn, move on, right?

Our tree only leans when you look at it from certain angles, so I try to not look at it from those angles.

Our Christmas is going to be quiet this year I think. We’ve had our busy time already, so now it is just Christmas Day, and there will only be 6 of us, so I think it will be nice.

    1. Yes, well I know that me legs were probably under strength than they would have normally been because I’ve only just got back to running, but this helps me know what needs improvement.

  6. We always get a real tree, so there is always some leaning. We aren’t doing a tree this year, though, since we are travelling. Our house doesn’t look very festive, but I think I’m okay with it because it is always such a production to get the tree, haul it home, get out the decorations, and all that. But then again, I do like looking at it when it is up…
I was just at the library bookstore today and thought about picking up some puzzles for work, but I got overwhelmed by the options so left empty handed. Oh well, our office is pretty empty for the next few months, so I have time…
There is so much tasty food in your posts!

    1. Getting a real tree is even more of a production than putting up the fake one.

  7. I am so so looking forward to doing ma annual puzzle after Christmas. I have two unmuzzled one in the cupboard and added two more to my wishlist so I think I will do two this year. I am excited.
That snowflake Christmas tree is looking great. What a unique idea.
