Good Things Friday

G left for China on Sunday, so I’ve been largely solo adulting this week. I must say it is much better than solo parenting. Monday, family dinner was still on, but it was only the girls and I. The weather has been rainy and colder here, we are moving fully into autumn. The leaves on our maple tree have just started to turn.

Cool Bloggers Walking Club

I’m joining Elisabeth’s CBWC in April, and I’ve decided to pair it with my planned A-Z photography project. As I walk this month, I’ll be looking for things around the neighbourhood that start with all the letters of the alphabet. Above is a sneak peek.

First Cross Country Race of the 2024 Season

I’m going to count this as a good thing, although I didn’t feel ready to be racing a 5K. I haven’t done much speedwork at all because I’ve been focusing on distance, my foot is still a bit sore, and my sleep has been terrible. Positives: I just looked at my past results, and I actually got a PB on this course, which surprised me. Also, it was good practice digging in towards the end of a race when I just wanted to throw it in.

St Stephens Op Shop

This is our church’s op shop. Staffed by more than 50 volunteers, it always has an eclectic selection, and it has been our best source by far for large jigsaw puzzles. I walked to the post office on Monday to pick up a parcel, stopped at the oppie on my way home and found a 3000-piece jigsaw. I didn’t have the dimensions of our puzzle roll, but I’m hoping it will fit—we used the roll for the other 3000-piece we did.

The long-awaited neurologist appointment …

finally happened. He confirmed what I suspected, that my vertigo is not BPPV but actually vestibular migraines. It absolutely explains why no health professionals have ever been able to trigger it to confirm it, and it is a bit frustrating that I went this long with the wrong diagnosis. The plan is for me to take a magnesium herbal supplement for migraines, and I’ve got a different medication for when I have an episode. Previously, I’ve only had stemetil and it was not that helpful. The doctor said his patients usually find it more effective and with less grogginess, so I hope that is true for me too. I need to keep a headache diary for the next four months and record how often I have an episode and how much medication I need, and he’ll use that to assess whether I need to have preventative medicines. If I can avoid that, I will because they have side effects, including weight gain. As I was leaving, the doctor told me that it would improve with treatment … so I’m hopeful.

Bonus Good Things

  • The girls and I have been working on this puzzle. It is hard, and the difficulty is compounded by the girl’s rules that you can’t look at the finished picture … I may have sneaked a peek when they weren’t around. Hard is good though because it takes us longer to finish it.
  • We ended up almost bingeing on The Gentlemen. We wanted to finish it before G left for China. Ridiculous fun.
  • I haven’t been able to find one of my lightweight toe socks for running for a few weeks now, and it finally turned up on the weekend. Hopefully, now there will be a little less hunting around for socks before I head out the door.

How has your week been? Do things disappear in your house and then turn up randomly when you’re least expecting it?

I’m having heart palpatations just looking at all the sky in that new puzzle, but what a great find. You know I am HERE FOR THRIFTING.
Love the A-Z hunt, especially paired with daily walking <3

You have had such a long, frustrating road with getting to the bottom of your migraines/vertigo. It sounds like you've taken an important step forward and I hope treatments are successful without any challenging side effects. Progress is a good thing, and I hope things move in a positive direction very quickly.

3000 pieces!!! How long will that take you to do?!

I have had luck with decreasing headaches/vertigo with magnesium and a Vitamin B supplement. My doctor recommended it and it has been helpful, so I hope this new treatment will bring you some relief.

That’s good to hear about the Mg, I hope it works for me.

I do the puzzles with my daughters so it depends how long they spend over here. Maybe 2-3 weeks I think?

3000 piece puzzles? You’re not allowed to look at the picture? You guys are hardcore puzzlers!!!
” I haven’t done much speedwork at all because I’ve been focusing on distance, my foot is still a bit sore, and my sleep has been terrible.” I could have written that sentence! But, nice job on your race! Sometimes you just have to jump in and see what you can do.
I’m glad you finally have a correct diagnosis for the vertigo. Now you can figure out what to do about it! I hope the magnesium supplement is successful.

I love that people around the world (!) have joined the Cool Bloggers Walking Club… I was late to the party and couldn’t join in time, but I love seeing the pictures that others share.

I hope the meds for the migraines will help. It must feel good to finally have a diagnosis.

What an amazing puzzle find. I would so love to sit down with you and puzzle away. You constant share of puzzles makes me get one out and do it. I usually only do it after Christmas and before New Years. But I have two unpuzlled ones sitting here.

I am so sorry that the vertigo is part of you migraines. How annoying. I am hoping your medine will work. I have just evaluated 17 yeras of migraine diary. I’ve been keepin it ever since my diagnose. It did help in adjusting my medication and also looking back I can see what big longterm triggers have been. I’ve been on preventive medicine for many years. I admit the beta blockers weren’t my favorite and I am glad I have swapped those to the monthly injections. Which reminds me I have not done it yesterday so I should do it asap.

I have a friend who went on the monthly injections recently and they have made a big difference. We will see if I need to go with a preventative once the four months are gone I guess.
