Lightscape 2023 – The Royal Botanic Gardens

Last year I was keen to see Lightscape at the Royal Botanic Gardens, but the tickets were sold out when I got myself organised. This year I vowed not to make the same mistake, so I decided we would go as soon as we had a good weather forecast. A flurry of messages in our family group chat established that the kids were keen to go, so last Wednesday, we went. Our son and daughter had early work finishes, so we could make it to the first block at 5:30 pm. The sun had just set, so we were in twilight for the first little bit.

LIghtscape is an immersive light show where you meander along the 2.1km trail through the Royal Botanic Gardens. I spent just over an hour admiring the various installations. The texture of the trees and plants takes on a new dimension when lit like this. With the installations spanning the whimsical, think mushrooms and giant shining seed heads to indigenous themes in the totem poles and eels of Many Nicholson, there was so much to take in.

Some of my favourite shots:

Afterwards, we went across the road to The Botanical for dinner. We debated eating at the food trucks at Lightscape, but it was cold and finding somewhere to sit and eat at those things is always problematic.

One word- WOW!!! My only regret while we are in Spain- not being able to see the cities at night- the kids go to bed at 7pm and no one to leave them with. I guess I have to come back alone 😉

Cities certainly take on a different look and feel at night, but better to see them during the day rather than not at all. Also the later summer sunset times make getting out in the dark a little harder.

This is gorgeous! I would love (LOVE) to do something like this. There is a winter light show about an hour away from us, but it’s all inside (because winter in Canada is cold!!)…so the idea of wandering around outside on a warm evening sounds delightful.

Wow, that’s so cool. We have something similar in my hometown and my parents usually go and send pictures every year 🙂
