Middle Rhine Valley Day 1: Arrival Oberwesel

Thursday 27th September 2026

This part of the town wall was right next to the station

We flew into Frankfurt at 9:20 am, and had originally planned to take a combination of train and boat to Oberwesel. Unfortunately the water level in the Rhine was so low that most of the KD lines boats were unable to run and none could stop at Oberwesel, so we caught the train all the way. It takes about an hour from Frankfurt Airport. We were staying at Schonburg Castle. I asked G if he wanted to ring the hotel to organise a taxi. I explained it was 900m up a steep hill but he said we’ll be right and decided to walk. Then he found a different path that was only 600 m. What he didn’t realise was that it was part of the long distance hiking path and a very rough, steep part. You can imagine my annoyance as I was carrying my case (luckily just a carry-on) up this rough rocky path. I was sweating buckets by the end of this.

Our Hotel

We finally made it up to the top and our room was ready so we checked in. Our room was luckily not up any more stairs. We had a view into the courtyard and up the valley.

The view into the castle courtyard from our room
And from the other window a view up the valley

We got settled then had a drink and a charcuterie platter on the terrace overlooking the Rhine. Then it was time to have a look around town. We went the other longer way down the hill. It was easier but still had a substantial section of dirt switchback path. This was our preferred route up and down for the rest of our stay.

The town is quite small but has fairly intact town walls and towers, a couple of churches and a giant wine glass in front of the Rathaus.

We walked a small section of the walls. You can see a couple of the towers as well
Looking down from the walls into the town square
The Rathaus (Townhall)
And the giant wineglass out the front of the Rathaus
I love these signs that hang off the buildings in Germany.

We ate dinner at the castle restaurant our first and last nights in their à la carte restaurant and the food was good traditional German. Breakfast was included and was also good. The hotel was very quiet, being up the top of the hill and we were able to open the windows which always helps me sleep better.

  1. That was your hotel????? It’s amazing! And the room is beautiful. This looks like a really cute little town.

  2. Spectacular! I’ve never been excited by the sound of German food, but it sure is beautiful there. I’m looking forward to seeing more!

  3. G made you carry your suitcase 600m uphill? With your legs tired from the marathon? Haha, I would have been annoyed too.
Still, the trek was worth it. What a great place to stay!
