    The state of the river

Last weekend we went up to Moama for the Pop and Pour festival. We had been wondering whether it would go ahead because of the widespread flooding through Victoria in mid-October. Echuca-Moama is situated where the Campaspe and Goulbourn Rivers flow I, not the Murray River. Both these rivers had flooded upstream from Echuca before the flood waters flowed down to join an already full Murray River. Luckily the festival still went ahead. with 3000 people attending, it provided a welcome boost to the local tourist industry, which the locals appreciated. The river is currently closed, and looks like it might be closed until late February, which will affect people…

    Melbourne Street Art

Melbourne is apparently world-famous for its street art. I want to do a tour one day and learn more about it because I’m clueless, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying it. If I have time, when I go into the city, I like to scoot down some of the laneways and check out what’s around. This is what’s around at the moment. See above why I can’t offer you expert commentary. There are also a series of commissioned works called Flash Fwd. I’ve linked the page for each one so you can learn more. Lees Place: Evans Lane: Corrs Lane 2: Hughs Alley: What do you think of street…

    Indigenous Plants

One of the goals for our garden is to include plantings to enhance our local biodiversity. To this end, I’ve been doing some research. I found several helpful resources: Once I had a reasonable idea of the main plants in our area, I took notes as I walked and ran to see how they grow. Some plants I’m thinking of including: Banksia. Good for birds of all sizes, mammals and butterflies. Large yellow flowers Feb-Jun followed by seed heads. White Correa. White star-shaped flowers in spring and summer. Good for honey-eaters, small birds and butterflies. Flax-lily. Blue flowers Sept-Dec. Good for reptiles and butterflies. Common Everlasting. Yellow flowers in Sept-Dec.…

    Taking Stock November 2022

Taking stock of where I am this month with prompts by Pip. Making: the most of our temporary digs. I went to an exhibition at the ACMI, strolled down through Chinatown on my way to do some shopping, ate yummy pizza in Carlton, ran in Princes, Royal Park and Westgate Park and visited the State Library. The weather has not been fabulous, and we are away this weekend, but we will try to do a few more interesting things while we’re here.Getting: ideas for our garden from an abundance of native plantings in our public spaces.Cooking: in my mum’s apartment kitchen. It’s very well-stocked with cooking equipment, but I have…

    Walking

Several years ago, one of my university assignments was to do a neighbourhood exegesis. This involved a two-hour walk around the neighbourhood, with a list of questions to help me notice important details. A couple of years later, I did a subject called Mission in the Australian Context. The major assignment was to do an in-depth Community Exegesis of either our neighbourhood or our faith community neighbourhood. This time I used my half-marathon training to run many of the streets in the local area. Each time I got back, I would mark down my path and any observations I had made. I tried to cover as many streets as possible…

    Why I Still Blog

This is a follow-up to yesterday’s post. Thank you to those who weighed in on the discussion in the comments. Suzanne made the important point that the popularity of your social media account or blog matters, which I agree with; I’m not commanding or seeking to command the heights of the attention economy. (Hopefully, that means I’m not petty and narcissistic?) I do find it helpful to think about why I blog and check in regularly with what’s motivating me. I don’t think all online publishing (or even most) online publishing is attention-seeking which is why I am still blogging. A major reason why I blog is for writing and…
