Reading, Watching, Listening – December 2023

It’s been a while since I did one of these posts, but maybe you have a bit of time to surf the net in this week? Reading First up some posts to help you reflect on the year that was, or the year to come. End of Year Reflection Questions by Tsh Oxenreider on the commonplace. Austin Kleon has a selection of his own and others’ Prompts for the New Year. This year I managed for the second time to grow seeds in punnets, but it’s never very successful. Maybe I should follow Casey’s lead—“I’m breaking up with punnets”. This season I got tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants started indoors, although…

    Good Things Friday

POINT LONSDALE It feels like ages since we were last in Point Lonsdale. Looking back through my photos, the last time was the Labour Day weekend in March. The whole family has been down and it has been great to catch up. As usual, the holidays involve lots of cooking, afternoon naps, reading books, going for seaside runs and sitting around either inside or outside and chatting. CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS WITH A 3-YEAR-OLD IN THE MIX Four households under one roof make a lot of presents. My sister has a three-year-old so we were back to having the excitement of a young child around. She first woke at 4 am, but…

List #3: Foods I ate Christmas Day

Getting together with family and the food are my favourite parts of Christmas Day celebrations. The presents … I could take or leave them. This year we had lunch with my family and dinner with my husbands. My family usually eats the same food every time we have Christmas lunch, with the occasional addition. One year we had salmon as well as our traditional turkey and ham, this year we had a second dessert of bread and butter pudding. Here’s everything I ate on Christmas Day. We ate lunch at my brother’s place at Point Lonsdale which is next door to my parent’s house so we divvied up the cooking…

    A Word for 2024 – Renewal

I’ve picked words to define my year before and followed through with varying degrees of success. Looking back at my old blog reminded me of what I had picked in previous years—Habit (2015), Intention (2014), Act (2010) and Breathe (2007). I had no intention of picking a word for 2024 until one day at the end of November while listening to the Rebuilders podcast they began talking about renewal. This year has been a good one, we have had some exciting travels, and we’ve settled into our new home, neighbourhood and church, but we’ve also had some stressful family dynamics (largely resolved now) and I have had some niggling health…

    Good Things Friday

Recapping all the good things from this week … WE FINISHED THE PUZZLE The girls popped over on Saturday and we finished off the 3000-piece puzzle. I had to get our mini-step ladder out to get this photo. SUNDAY MORNING RUN I did my long run on Saturday morning so I could go to church on Sunday morning (we usually go in the evening). I knew I could get up at my normal time and still squeeze in the 6 km before 9 am church. The conditions were stunning, I had to stop for a photo along the Elstern Canal just near us. FOUR-DAY WORK WEEK Hubby just changed to…

In The Garden – December 2023

This has been a year-long project where I photograph our garden each month. The garden is still sporting some thigh-high weeds that grew up while we were away but I’ve got a fair bit of it weeded and I gave the Myoporum a massive haircut today. I thought it might be fun to compare with the photos from January. The growth in the garden over the year has been amazing. I’m looking forward to the plants growing enough to fill in the gaps in the next year. The biggest surprise in the garden has been the everlasting daisy I planted in February. It has been flowering constantly since then and…

    101 Things in 1001 Days: 100-Day Check-in

I started my 101 Things list on September 11th this year. It’s my way of making sure I’m not falling into rut and keep welcoming all the little (and big) things that make life richer. I’ve decided to do an update on my progress every 100 days. I even marked the dates on my calendar. Here goes: I calculate that as 11.73% complete, so on track. Do you have a 101 list/bucket list? What are the things you like to do or would like more of in your life?

    Good Things Friday

G had a cold last weekend so he missed out on all the good things … and was not too happy about it. While I was out partying, he stayed home and tidied up our storage cage so it was easier to get my bike in. He was very bored by the end of the weekend. Anyway on to the good things … BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Yes, they continued through until Saturday. We had our family (plus the girlfriend) celebration for my and E’s birthday on Saturday night. We went to a Sri Lankan restaurant called Indu in the city. It was my first experience of Sri Lankan food and I…
