K’Gari: 4WD Beauty Spots Day Tour

K’Gari (Fraser Island) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the largest sand island in the world. The World Heritage property covers 181,851 hectares and includes all of K’gari and several small islands off the island’s west coast. It is the world’s largest sand island, offering an outstanding example of ongoing biological, hydrological and geomorphological processes. The development of rainforest vegetation on coastal dune systems at the scale found on K’gari is unique, and the island boasts the world’s largest unconfined aquifer on a sand island and half of the world’s perched freshwater dune lakes. K’gari has exceptional natural beauty with more than 250 kilometres of clear sandy beaches…

    Friday Thoughts #18

We are now on K’Gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) for a long weekend before heading down to the Gold Coast for the marathon festival. Our time in Noosa was fantastic. The weather was a bit warmer than last year and I feel like we settled in more quickly this year because we didn’t need to work out where to run, do pilates, shop etc. I plan to do a few posts on some more of the things we got up to while we were here, but for now, a Noosa rainbow grid: Red: Hiking at Mount Tribrogargan, Orange: Jetty Noosa River, Yellow: Cocktails at Ricky’s Bar and Grill, Green,…

    May Books

We’re a fair way into June now so I thought I’d better get on with posting the books I read. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow – Gabrielle Zevin I’m not into video games, but I loved this. Although gaming is a big part of the plot, this character-driven story focuses on the relationship between Sadie and Sam. I started noting some sentences I liked and then, as usual, got too into the story to remember to stop and savour the really good bits. How Bad are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything – Mike Berners-Lee This book is about the carbon footprint of many things we consume daily. The book…

Melbourne to Noosa Roadtrip: Yamba, Byron Bay

Our third night out of Sydney was spent in Yamba. We arrived mid-afternoon, and after settling into the motel, we went for a walk along the river to the beach and picked up our friend on our way past the caravan park towards the beach. The following day we left for the Gold Coast via Byron Bay. This was the last actual day of our road trip holiday. The Thursday involved sorting out the car and was a work day for Hubby (visiting clients) and I (paying bills), before we went with the business partner to Noosa. ACTIVITIES Yamba, we only did a walk along the river. At Ballina, we…

Melbourne to Noosa Roadtrip: Dorrigo National Park

While driving between Nambucca Heads and Yamba, we stopped at Dorrigo National Park. This is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Area. From the National Park Website: The rainforests in Dorrigo National Park are part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, the most extensive strip of diverse rainforest anywhere on earth. The World Heritage Area is a direct window into the past and the future, providing a link to the ancient pre-human world and a stunning and irreplaceable record of life on our planet. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/dorrigo-national-park/learn-more First, we took in the view from the Skywalk. There are many walks in the National Park, but we decided on the…

    Friday Thoughts #17

We went hiking in the Glasshouse Mountains last weekend. We started with a steep but concreted walk up to a lookout. I forget what this one was called, but the view was pretty good. Next we headed to Mount Tibrogargan. We started on the circuit walk, then decided to give the peak trail a go. There were a lot of warnings at the turnoff. The first section is steep, rocky steps, but then it changed to climbing. I decided to pull the pin here. I wasn’t feeling like challenging my fear of heights. Two of our party continued while the rest continued the circuit walk. It soon started raining pretty…

Melbourne to Noosa Roadtrip: Tidal Bay Gaol and Nambucca Heads

We left Port Stephens on Monday morning, heading towards Nambucca Heads with a stop at Tidal Bay Gaol. Our accommodation at Nambucca Heads was The Beach Rooms, a 60’s refurbished motel overlooking the river. The rooms are all refurbished in a coastal style. There is also an excellent open-air lounge/kitchen area near the pool which would be useful during a longer stay. ACTIVITIES Tidal Bay Gaol: is a 317 km drive from Bannisters Port Stephens and 50 km south of Nambucca Heads near the small town of South West Rocks. Tidal Bay Gaol was built in 1886 to house prisoners building a breakwater to provide a safe harbour between Sydney…

    Friday Thoughts #16

Noosa has been incredible so far. The weather has been stunning, although a change is coming this weekend. Last year while we were here, I didn’t swim in the ocean once. After the success of my goal to swim five times over summer, I’ve decided to do the same thing while I’m up here. I’ve already swum twice, including this morning. Of course, hitting this goal with a water temperature of 22C on Noosa’s main beach is not too hard. We’ve also been taking advantage of the weather with walks along the river in the morning when we don’t have a run scheduled and around sunset every day. Sometimes we…
