    Friday Thoughts #20

I had my second Shingles vax a couple of weeks ago and once again was laid up with fever and aches and pains. I took a while to start to feel better and nearly fainted in the gym the following week, but I have managed to get back into running, completing fours runs, all easy, but done. Luckily for me this is long lasting vaccination so I don’t need to think about it again. Between coming back from holidays and not feeling the best, my motivation to get things done has been pretty low. I need to turn this around and get back into some better routines. I can’t believe…

Lightscape 2023 – The Royal Botanic Gardens

Last year I was keen to see Lightscape at the Royal Botanic Gardens, but the tickets were sold out when I got myself organised. This year I vowed not to make the same mistake, so I decided we would go as soon as we had a good weather forecast. A flurry of messages in our family group chat established that the kids were keen to go, so last Wednesday, we went. Our son and daughter had early work finishes, so we could make it to the first block at 5:30 pm. The sun had just set, so we were in twilight for the first little bit. LIghtscape is an immersive…

    June’s Books

The Nightingale – Kristin Hannah A story about the strength of the women left behind to survive the Nazi occupation of France. I enjoyed the development of the main characters and the way they each grappled with the terrible circumstances they found themselves in. (4 stars) The Hours – Michael Cunningham Warning: This book contains suicide, terminal illness and depression, so it is not a cheerful romp. A Pulitzer Prize winner, this book concerns three women living in different times (the 1920s, 1940s and 2000s) linked by the book Mrs Dalloway. The story chops between characters, with each having their own story of desperate longing. The way Cunningham captures their…

    Looking Forward, Looking Backward – June 2023 and a half-yearly check-in

I learned something new this week – July 2nd is the middle of the year. I usually do a check-in each month with my intentions but since we are over half-way through the year I thought I’d also look at how I’m going over the course of the year. Daily Routines: my intention in this area was to try out new habits each month to see what I wanted to include going forward. This has not been going well over the last few months, and May’s intention to do foam rolling/mobility was an epic fail. I’m thinking that I’m not really buying into this intention so I’m going to scrap…

    Gold Coast Half-Marathon Recap

Last Saturday, I ran the Gold Coast Half-Marathon. My preparation since my multiple lurgies in early March/April went as well as I could have hoped for. I built up to several long runs over 20km, topping out at a 24km long run three weeks before the race. I mostly hit my goal paces on my workouts and did all my scheduled runs apart from a couple in the taper since we were at K’Gari, and it wasn’t conducive to running due to the dingoes and the terrain. I had a small blip on my last long a week before the race. We’d packed up to leave for K’Gari on the…

    Friday Thoughts #19

We are home! After leaving K’Gari, we headed down to the Gold Coast for the Gold Coast Marathon Festival. We picked up daughter #2 from Brisbane Airport on the way. I want to share some of what we did in Noosa and more from K’Gari as well as a Gold Coast HM recap, but for now, I’ll share a few stories from our time at the Gold Coast. We stayed in Main Beach, right on the beach. This distracted Hubby as he kept spotting whales migrating when he was supposed to be working. I did a bit of work but also had some time for fun. My daughter and I…
