    Good Things Friday

This week has not been the easiest. The report from my MRI finally came in and I have a stress fracture in my second metatarsal which means I’m now in a boot. . I also lost most of two days to vestibular migraine. On Wednesday, I just managed to stick with work long enough to finish payroll before going back to bed for a couple of hours. Even so, the week still had plenty of good things. Mother’s Day Celebrations Since Sunday was going to be taken up by G’s long run and then lunch with his family, I had my Mother’s Day celebrations on Saturday. The girls came over…

    Tenderheart Cook #23, #24 and #25

Miso-maple sugar snap, turnip and strawberry salad There were no turnips in the shops when I made this, so we omitted them, which I was not sad about. This a lovely, salad. The Quick Lowdown: Fennel and gnocchi salad with fennel frond pesto I made this one day for myself, making the fennel frond pesto and pan-frying just enough gnocchi for one. The next day, my son was home, so I fried off the rest of the gnocchi and mixed through the pesto and sliced fennel. If you buy fennel with the fronds, you’ll use that to make the pesto with garlic, pumpkin seeds, olive oil, and parmesan (although I…

    Tasmania 2024: Day 6 Hobart

After a yummy breakfast (coconut rice pudding), we caught an UBER to the Cascade Brewery. This is the oldest brewery in Australia and was opened in 1932. The company operated as a sawmill from 1924. The tour starts in the visitor’s centre, which occupies the old family house and associated buildings. We collected our safety gear—hard hats, high-vis and safety glasses and headed across the road to the brewery building. What followed was a crash course in making beer, which I had no idea about prior to this tour, including an explanation of the different types of beers. This was followed by a beer tasting. G and I shared one…

    Good Things Friday

Dinner Party “Have my school friends over” is on my list, and I am happy to report that it happened on Friday night. G was away in Noosa with his school friends, so I figured this was the perfect opportunity to have my school friends over for dinner. I reconnected with two of them at the running group, which is kind of bizarre. I ran into the fourth friend’s sister at our local cafe, and since we now live on the same side of town, we got together towards the end of last year for a walk and talk. The others hadn’t seen her for a number of years, so…

    Tenderheart Cook #5

I’m cooking my way through the Tenderheart cookbook but realised in my post numbering I missed #5, so here we are. Smushy spiced peas with any roasted vegetables Hmmm … this is a very unappetising photo, but this was good. Cooked frozen peas are lightly blended with garlic, ground cardamon, ground cumin, a chilli, herbs and some olive oil and served under your choice of roast vegetables. Super easy and super tasty. The Quick Lowdown:

    April 2024 Books

King: The Life of Martin Luther King – Jonathan Eig This was an excellent biography. Admittedly, not being American, I only knew the bare bones about MLK, but this certainly gave me a better picture of him and his radical gospel-centred vision. His understanding of the captivity and diminishment of the oppressed and the oppressors is something that is important to grasp for us today, especially in the face of competing political forces that tend to take a zero-sum outlook. (4 stars) Defiant (Skyward #4) – Brandon Sanderson Spensa is reunited with her friends from around the galaxy to fight together against the Superiority. A fitting end to the Skyward…

    Good Things Friday

I was stuck largely at home over the weekend and until Wednesday morning with a cold. It was good to finally get out and about a bit—to the gym and a meeting at church on Wednesday and some errands on my bike on Thursday—but I’m taking it slowly. Here are some homey good things from this week. Sweet Chilli Sauce I love a bit of sweet chilli sauce on my oat and lentil porridge, it’s also good on grain bowls and in chicken wraps. Since my chilli plant has produced well this year, and I needed to use them before trimming the plant back before winter, I decided to bottle…

How did I go? – The Cool Bloggers Walking Club

At the start of April, Elisabeth invited us to join her, walking for ten minutes each day for the month. Since I almost always walk or run for ten minutes every day I figured this would be easy and I decided to join all the other cool kids. Ambitiously I decided to pair it with my A-Z photography project. The aim was to look out for things starting with all the letters of the alphabet while out on my walks. I started well until I hurt my foot running. Of course, at first, that didn’t stop me, but as the month wore on, I had to have a few rest…
