New York Museums – Sat 4 Nov

This morning G had to drop his bag at the bag drop in Central Park so we walked together to do that. Central Park is looking beautiful with all the autumn leaves. After dropping the bag G headed back to the hotel and I went to The Met. So, it’s huge, but I am obsessed with very old things so I chose to spend most of my time in the Egyptian galleries, with a few other highlights. I also walked through one of the current exhibitions Tree and Serpent which contained early Buddhist art from India which was fascinating. After The Met I caught the subway to the 9/11 Memorial.…

Brooklyn Food Tour – Friday Nov 3rd

OK, back to Friday’s activities. We began the morning by joining the Fleet Feet Morning Miles run. It was a fun way to start the day but given what was coming next it would have been good for me to run further than 3km. I told you we love food tours … and there’s even more to come. Today’s, Best of Brooklyn 1/2 Day Food and Cultural Tour was a bit different, being a bus tour, which made it perfect for us, since G was serious about resting his legs before the big race. We met the guide in the West Village. Driving through Manhattan we got some good commentary…

    Marathon Sunday – 5th November

I’m skipping ahead because … Marayhon Sunday!! Today was the big day. My husband caught the bus at 5:30 am from Bryant Park. The bus driver got lost on the way so they spent 45 mins longer on the bus. This turned out not too bad because he was in the warm sitting on a comfortable seat. They arrived 10 minutes before my husband’s corral opened. He was pretty impressed with the number of toilets provided, he didn’t even have to queue which has been pretty standard at most races. I had my plan to try to see G in four spots. I caught the subway out to Brooklyn 86th…

Cruise and BIB Pickup – Thurs Nov 2nd

In order to see a bit of New York while also keeping my husband off his legs we did a Circle line cruise. It was supposed to go all the way around the island, but t he e tide was too high to get through. We went as far as we could up the East River then back. We got a good view of the Statue of Liberty, the bridges and the skyline. Lunch was dell’anima at the Gotham Market. We sat up at the chef’s counter and watched the cooking. The pasta was good and perfect for carb-loading. After lunch we popped over to the Javits Centre to pick…

UN, MOMA and a Musical – Wed Nov 1 2023

Thanks to all of you who commented on my photos. I couldn’t bring my proper camera due to weight restrictions so all these photos are taken with my iPhone 12 mini. Today marked the start of my husband’s intention to preserve his legs for the marathon on Sunday. In practice that means that I headed off on my own for a potion of the days. My plan was to take advantage of this time by myself to visit some galleries. I actually prefer doing this by myself because I can look at what I want to see for as long as I feel like. We started the morning at the…

DC to New York -Halloween 2023

Today Hubby and I swapped roles – he didn’t sleep well so skipped his run while I got up and hit the Capital Crescent Trail. While running along there, I noticed up ahead a black SUV reversing up the trail with a Secret Service agent walking beside. I think he was just making sure the driver didn’t hit any of the cyclists or runners using the trail. Anyway, the Secret Service Agent said to me “You can keep running ma’am.” Is it slightly ridiculous that I thrilled by this interaction, and the possibility of someone important in the SUV about to go cycling on the same trail? I think it…

DC Museums and Monuments – Mon 30th October

We started our day at the National Air and Space Museum. We had tickets for 10 am. When we arrived just before opening the line stretched all the way down the block and around the corner. Once the museum opened it moved pretty fast and it was not long before we were inside. Our plan was to see the moon landing section and the history of flight and Wright brothers exhibitions. My tip is to head straight up the escalators to the moon landing then come downstairs afterwards. We did this and both sections were fairly empty doing it in this order. we spent about 1.5 hours there. Once we…

Georgetown Food Tour – Sun 29th October

My husband had a 20km run on his program for today so he got up and did that in the morning. When I woke I wasn’t feeling that great. I wasn’t sure whether I was coming down with something or the sore throat and blocked nose was just due to being very tired, which sometimes happens with me. I decided not to go running and lazed around the hotel. Luckily we didn’t have a big day of sightseeing planned. By the time we were due to go out I was feeling better. In the afternoon we walked across to the meeting spot for our Georgetown Food Tour. We try to…

Washington DC – Sat 28th November

We made it! After our Sydney to New York City flight was cancelled we had three connections to make, flying Melbourne-Sydney-Los Angeles-New York-Washington DC. We left home at 3:40am on Friday Melbourne time and got to our hotel at 10 pm on Friday (Washington time). Door to door, that’s 31:21 hours of travel. This included 21:44 hours in the air. I was over it by the end. Had a bath and went to bed. In the morning my husband had to wake me up and we went for a 6km run to the National Mall. We have watched a lot of TV over the years that featured DC so it…

    Packing a 7kg Carry-On for 4 Weeks

If we can, we usually try to travel carry-on only, especially when we have multiple connecting flights and train travel. It’s much easier on the trains if you only have a small amount of luggage. Going carry-on also means that your bags won’t get lost on the way. Lots of connections means more opportunities for the bags to go missing. We once had our flight into Hong Kong delayed, we ran to our connection and got on but our bags did not. A friend recently went to Berlin for the Berlin marathon and his luggage finally caught up with him back in Melbourne. This holiday proved a challenge to pack…
