Friday Thoughts #12

What? Is it already Friday? It was Anzac Day on Tuesday, and Hubby took Monday off so we could get some jobs done around the home. We had a big box of bits and pieces from the various appliances installed in the apartment, and we went through that to work out what we needed to keep and what could go away, so that’s another box in the study gone. We’re getting some quotes for some built-in cabinetry in there. Hopefully, we can get rid of the rest of the boxes and get everything put away neatly.

I find shorter weeks mess with my routine, and this week has been a bit all over the place with getting things done. We had our small group over for dinner on Tuesday night so I did do a cleanup before that but our bathroom needs some attention and my jobs list has got longer, not shorter this week.


On my list for April was to get the family photos framed. It’s done, and we’ll pick them up from the framer later today.


I’ve been reading How Bad Are Bananas?: The Carbon Footprint of Everything. There are some surprising figures in there. So far, though, I think my decision a few years ago to stop getting the paper on weekends was right. He calculates that two big weekend papers for a year are the equivalent of flying from London to Barcelona. I like how he frames everything as a personal decision within an overall “carbon budget.”


Last weekend I did the Angela Taylor 10KM and tacked on 8km at the start. It was my first run over 16km for at least eight weeks, and my legs died after about 15km. Admittedly my overall pace was a bit quicker than my usual long-run pace. I had a pretty good hilly threshold workout with our group on Tuesday morning, but my legs were dead after Wednesday’s gym session. I dragged my way through my 10km easy run on Thursday, and my backside is sore when I sit down from the glute work on Wednesday. I hope my scheduled day off today will be enough to overcome my tiredness.

Tomorrow I have another cross-country race, a 10km course at Westerfolds Park. This isn’t a premiership race for our club, and I won’t be racing it as a 10km. I’ll add some extra kilometres to warm up and cool down and try for a solid but comfortable pace. The course has some horrendous hills, including the STRAVA segments “Little F**K Off Hill” and “Big F**K off hill”, so we’ll have to see how my tired legs deal with it. I don’t think I’ll be setting a PR. I’m looking forward to my cut-back week next week.

    Holidays definitely throw me off and I think I’m forever confused about what day of the week it is. With kids in school + a husband that travels regularly, it’s hard to really settle into a set routine. I also don’t work a typical 9-5, Mon-Fri, so some of the typical landmarks in a week don’t exist for me. That said, I almost always know when it’s Friday because that’s my favourite day of the week!

      Yes, that sounds similar to my routines … or lack of. I’ve especially noticed this since the kids finished school, luckily I have running training to keep me a bit clued in to what day it is.
